My '97 is up at 85K at the moment.
Since its roughly 8 years old thats an average of 10K per year
however.. i'm pretty sure its been clocked in the past due to service book discrepencies i noticed a year after buying it.
-
I passed 90k today.
It had 72k miles when i bought it in April last year. I should have bought a diesel!
-
mine had 75k when i bought it in oct 2003..
so i've put 10k on in nearly 20 months.

Mine had 74k when i bought it in sept 2001 and it is now on 142k....started to make some tired (and expensive) noises!!
-
So who's done the most then? Heard stories of 250k plus with same engine and gearbox on MK 2's. I'm at a low of 118,000 and having had it since 32,000 only changed a starter motor and the rear shocks apart from the usual (exhausts and tyres)...... Was also wondering what sort of oil people were using when they got to this sort of milage. I see you can get high mileage oil now but with mine still feeling as tight as ever, I'm wondering if putting this treacle in is such a good idea??????
-
not sure really mate.. i put the gold synta stuff in last time i needed some.
also.. have you seen that VW recommend different amounts of oil level on the dipstick depending upon what kind of driving its getting. there is a regular heavy load / "hills and towing" recommended level where you put a bit more oil in.
-
whenever i do the oil and filter change i just go to VW and buy their 15w 40 oil (The synta in a blue container). Seems to do the trick and thought as the miles are getting up (142k) a bit of extra thickness may help protect her a bit....and the fact it is a very sensible price which is an added bonus from a VW stealer (C.£8 for 5 litres).
-
ah right.. i got the gold stuff as vw told me thats what i needed.

my 8v(96 P) is now at 142,500miles on the original gearbox and clutch & uses no oil whatso ever.car has been family owned since new & i change the oil every 4000miles with total quartz 10-40 synthetic "good price from local puegoet dealer" it has never failed an mot & i am taking the car too st tropez, south of france in 3 weeks time (2000 mile round trip) i have never had such a robust car ever and i am sure this superb qulaity vw golf will reach 200,000+ miles and all well maintained golfs should do the same!!!

meant to say mine is a '97 P with 142k and it is still on the same clutch and box, although the pressure plate is beginning toget noisy. take it for a service every 12 months (due to mileage I do for work), but do an oil change myself every 8-10k, so every 6 months. Looking back through the history of the car when it was barely 2 years old VW did a £500 service on it and some poor sod spend £2500 on gearbox work
-
Unfortunately I don't have a lot of the older history for my car :(
Since I've had it i've made sure all the important things have been serviced and replaced.
-
Just been to GSF to get some service bits and asked them what type of oil I should be putting in at 118,000 miles. He suggeted I stick to good (at least GTX) 10/40 if there is nothig wrong with it. Makes sence really, thicker oil will be terrible on morning as it takes longer to circulate. Guess it comes down to gut instinct and knowing your car well before you start putting the thick stuff in. Basically when things start to get a little louder.......

My 95 valver has just clocked over 71k. Not bad for it's age i guess. Still feels great too! As for oil and fuel. It's magnatec and shell or bp all the way. No supermarket stuff.

Mines at 82k , got in 5 years ago at 55k

Mine is on 115k now. Bought it 2 and a half years ago now when it had 98k on the clock.
It was originally a company car, an Estate Agency in London. It was then bought by the woman that controlled the cars in that company, so she knew it was a good one!
I bought it from her.

I've got an 8v Anniversary which is yet to hit puberty, <45k. Had it a year and a half, got it MOT'd the other month and i'd only covered 3500 miles for the year. (I've got an L200 for work which gets a good hammering!) Got a great pic of it as i was arriving at Bug Jam last weekend, i'm sans scanner tho.

With regards to the oil situation the car would have been filled with 10/40 semi synthetic from new so providing you have FSH thats what would have been put in it and you should continue to use this, the benefits are increased the more miles you do.
10/40 is thinner as we all know and takes less time to get up to optimal operating temp and reduces friction. Putting a 15/40 in after a car has done all its miles on a Semi will cause a sudden increase in wear and is not good at all.
Trust me, I work for Castrol Oil..!!  And they make VW's Quantum oil for them!!
