Title: Gear stick going straight across into reverse,
Post by: beechymonza on 09 January 2013, 15:00
My gearstick on my gti will go straight across into reverse without me pushing it down,
Would this be the ball on the bottom of gearstick, \
Or is it the metal rod with the ball on it under engine bay,
I know thats a sh&t description but im not sure what its called,,

It'll be the plastic 'stop' that is worn. Lift up the gaiter and take a peek inside.

just be sure it's the lock out "plate" that's broken and not the finger on the shift lever. it will give the same symptom.

Ok so i looked under the gear gaitor,  And the plastic stop has just come off in my hands, 1 of the corner pieces is broken off,
But on the gear shaft itself there is a piece that drops under the metal runner when going into reverse, This just goes straight under ,

You need to replace the cup that the gearshaft sits in, will make it sit higher.

The ball and cup come together. Ball needs to be put in a vice and somehow removed which I didn't bother with on mine because the housing had a hole through it so I just changed that. It's 4 bolts underneath and there's holes in the exhaust heat shield to get a socket through.
