Title: Rear Ended
Post by: trog_nfs on 08 January 2013, 23:31
Evening all,

On my way home from Uni today I was involved in a wee accident.

Basically traffic stopped unexpectedly on the way to a roundabout. I stopped in time, the guy behind me didn't. Annoying thing was I could see in the rear view he was going to hit me, just had nowhere to go.

Anyway, he did stop and give all details.

I couldn't really see any damage at the roadside, so when I got home I whipped the bumper off to have a look to see what had been done.

Anyway, heres what I can see. Its dented in the middle and knocked the paint off

And this is what the bumper looks like. Some minor scratches, and a scuff to the plastic.

I had a look under the boot floor carpet, and couldn't see any bending or rippling so I think the bar did its job.

My question is, should I look for damage anywhere else?

The guy who hit me was a company car driver.
As the crash beam is probably weakened, I'd prefer to get it replaced. Providing nothing else is bent, I can fix the damage for about £35 all in. Should I make a claim, or see if they want to settle without getting the insurance companies involved?

Gutted. That feeling is horrible ain't it, waiting for impact. Looks like you got away with it tho. I'd check round the mounts of the rear bar, take the rear lights out and have a look to see if there's and damage around the rear corners.

my car was attacked by a YMCA furniture truck 2 months ago and got a lovly big bent scratch on the side.
its been such a pain in the aaaarse. i literally got it back today from the body shop. had all sorts of problems with it.  had to speak to 3 different company's who all have something to do with there company insurance.
they thought it had been a head on collision for ages, when actually my car was parked, and i wasn't even in it.
if its only a couple quid i would sort it your self.
mine got quoted for £700 so had no choice but to make them claim.

 been a nightmare

I had a better look in the daylight today, and all the mounts are fine.

Crash structure is the only thing bent, everything else is the right shape.

The guy who hit me rang today, as I said I'd let him know if the car was damaged etc.

He was v apologetic, asked if I was ok etc. Nice enough guy, just a shame he hit me really.

Anyway, I suggested not getting the insurance companies involved, which he was very happy with. About an hour later he brought round cash so I could buy the parts to fix it. Win.

The only damage to his was the grill badge had flown off. Vauxhall wanted £150 just for the badge apparently!
