I have been looking at getting some new brake pads, just for road use, believe it or not, Im still running the original factory ones, as only done 34k!
whats the general consensus for good mid range pads?
Euro Car Parts have Pagid, Bosch, ATE, Eicher etc, or are there better ones?
cheers!

There are always better ones, but it depends what you are using them for. As you've already mentioned, the ones you are on have lasted 34k miles and if they haven't been found wanting by you then source some more OEM ones. Out of the ones you have mentioned the Pagid ones should be best, but they may give you extra braking power you don't need and wear the discs faster. Are you sticking with the current discs or renewing those at the same time?
-
Thanks hurdy.
The discs seem fine, and so do the pads to be honest. But I have the niggling feeling that 6.5 year old pads will have hardened somewhat, so some fresh ones will tighten up braking.
I doubt I'll keep the car more than 2 more years, so not worried about the discs.

I replaced my pads with Pagid and they are very average...talk about fade lol, probably wouldn't take a lot to set them on fire as I have had them smoking quite easily.
Have you considered Ferodo or similar uprated pads?
Also it would be worth doing the discs at the same time I reckon.

They look a good option. You running these pads?

Not at the moment but will be using them when I next need pads as I've hear good reports about them.

Thanks all.
just spoke to VW, see what their prices are and.....
VW economy range front pads £49.06
VW Standard range front pads £64.96
when I asked what the difference was, he said economy range was VW's cheaper range for older cars and he said the cheaper ones are made from a "different material".
Thoughts?

Cant see the VW pads being any better than Pagid's variant? The standard brake setup on the GTI is average and you could add some real bite with uprated pads that wont fade after 10 minutes.
But if you choose between the two then probably better to go for the standard ones.
I think if you got the uprated pads you would notice the difference.

I am currently using Pagid front and rear pads and disks all from ECP. They are a pretty good road pad and disk from what I can tell. They have got me out of a few sticky situations and seem fine for normal road use. Only problem is the pedals isn’t as sharp as I would like it, but by only a fraction.
These pads look great though so I may save up for a set for when the fronts need replacing. That being said I am guessing the quantity I will need is 2? (I know I need 4 pads total to replace the fronts, and I am guessing they sell them in sets of 2)
Also any idea on if they do a rear pad set?

You need just front pads (all included in the box).
Personally I would stick with oem rear pads (or equivalent) as most of the heavy braking is done by the front brakes.

I can vouch for Ferodo DS2500's on the front. Std levels of bite when cold (which believe me, is quite something for fast road/race material) and stonking bite when warm. Also, no squeals, noise etc... which you often get from higher temp material. Yes, they are double the price of std pads, but they could just get you out of jail. Don't get me started with cheap tyres ... lol!

Hi gents, i've got a 2007 Ed30 and i'm due an MOT soon. Just wondered what the wear limit is on the standard disks, mine have a rim on the edges of a couple of mm but wondered what thickness the MOT man will be looking for.
Cheers
-
if you are down to a few mm get some new ones, they are only £30 from euro car parts!
-
Jesus a couple of mm, that is risking it for a biscuit! Like others are saying, new oem ones for £25/30....Job done!
-
No no no not 2mm left, they have worn by 2mm........ the way I wrote that caused the confusion
Just wondered what the thickness limits were ie. if the garage said "they're 50% worn" what's left?

Just thought I'd bump this thread in case it becomes of any use to anyone and in the hope it may provoke some chit chat on the Mk5 forums.
I replaced my ECB D&G Discs and Yellowstuff Pads all round a month or so ago after 65,000 spirited miles. Admittedly no track day use, but never left wanting on the road and by far the best brake set up have I've had on a car. They offer great vfm and seem to outlive the OEM setup by a long, long way, whilst producing better braking performance throughout the duration.
