Whats a good car for the older generation
Around 3-5 years old
Automatic (must)
As good fuel consumption as you can get with it being a AUTO
Reasonable sized Hatchback, currently drives a 55plate mondeo, but something slightly smaller would suffice.
Mainly for around town driving.
Think that's it for now.
Cheers

Avensis D4D Auto

Peugeot 207 hdi auto, good cars, good boxes, cheaply serviced, mega mpg, generally very reliable
Downside, it French, but they still build the best Diesels!
Japs still don't know how to build a diesel!

2.2 Honda Accord engine is brilliant IMO!
207 on the other hand... Mate has a 1.4 petrol with 35k. Headgasket already gone but been sorted. Yes that's a petrol but it has so many other electrical faults! Seatbelt warning lights, occasional random ABS faults etc.
It's being traded in.

Suzuki splash. Oldies love them

Like the one we have in atm, with a knackerd crank at 80k
We specialise in Peugeots, all we ever do to 207s is service them, and occasionally clear out the drain points on the scuttle, and sills, replaced the plugs on the rear lamps when they corrode, Peugeot now do a kit for a cheap proper repair for a few quid, and who the hell would buy a petrol 207, when you can get a diesel!

I know of a huge amount of engine knock on a 207 diesel of some sort on an 03 too but the odd one doesn't count.
Some pug engines are brilliant. Just the feel of the cars I hate. Even under the bonnet everything just feels cheap plastic.
Never know the the bloke when his dad bout the 1.4 207 but the electrics are all the same I'm sure inside. Had a lot of issues with it.

seriously.... if your budget is 7-8k then you have no need to look at anything french.
If it was my money I would go down the 1/3 series route or quite simply a passat would be ideal.
or if you want to push the boat out a little....

Quick, but thirsty for an oil burner also very expensive to repair.
Nice cars but best left as a lease vehicle so cost is not a factor.

Soon as he has a Mondeo and wants an economical automatic for £7-8k, I would suggest this 2009 Ford Focus Titanium Diesel. Good engine, fair levels of equipment, not bad to drive and is essentially a very new car. I'd assume being two owners that it is a former demonstrator or originally purchased by the dealership. Insurance and tax will also be affordable, along with fuel economy. All in all, a practical nearly new car which will suit his needs.

Yes.
170bhp TDI DSG
So it'll have better MPG than the manual.
£7k with 60k on the clock.
Done.

Because the quoted figures are w4nk. Unless you drive the slowest you possibly could the manual will always be more efficient.
