After a bit of advice, im playing with the idea of turning my Mk4 1.8T to rear wheel drive if its possible? Anyone got any thoughts or idea's how to go about it?
-
I would hazard a guess at the 4mo system somehow?
-
yea i thought of that, but biggest problem i can think of is what gearbox to use :undecided: as would like to keep my engine horizantally mounted as apposed to longitudinal mounted
-
I don't like the idea of using the 4motion setup, the rear diff is not designed for putting that much torque to the ground and are inherently weaker, there's quite a bit of drivetrain loss with the prop shaft running to the back and the weight balance isn't ideal for rear wheel drive.
There are other ways of doing a rear wheel drive mk4

I think the only RWD VAG car was the the original beetle, or the bently continental gt mulsanne. So you could have serious issues finding a donor transmission. Would prob be easier going the 4motion route. The amount of work it would take to do this is insane, especially keeping your engine transversaly mounted.
-
Could mount the engine in the back but some serious work to get it to work if it would.

This would be the best way of doing it.
Transmission is not a problem.
Although you would have to go logitudinal layout.
This will also give equal length driveshafts.

Someone built a rwd V8 passat on drift works, il try dig out the link

Might be of some help

You would have to use a haldex system with the front still connected then use a Ty gearbox with an r32 propshaft all the rear bits from the a TT or any 4 motion then wire it all up strengthen the rear diff to take extra power and torque then find someone to re-tune the haldex for a rear basis so most the powers going through the rear wheels but that's still awe just with rear wheel drive basis so basically would be easier drop the lump in the back longitudinal with equal length driveshafts as mentioned but still IMHO not worth it
-
RWD isnt worth it in my opinion, it would be too costly! Better option (my opinion, just saying) go 4 motion with a haldex controller.
Was toying with the idea with a friend, found out what is required, tt (180bhp or 225bhp) quattro gearbox and v6 4 motion, rear axle, haldex unit, wiring, fuel tank and floor cut up a bit to accomodate it!
But then again, anything under 350bhp ish, dosnt need haldex, just a decent LSD.

I would just use an Audi a4 fwd gearbox and just mount it in the rear with 2" tubular construction to double as a rear subframe from which tubular rear wishbones can be mounted on heim joints.
The a4 gearbox would be perfect for the job, longitudinal layout, ease of fitment, ideal weight distribution, equal length driveshafts, minimal transmission loss, direct bolt on and readily available without the need of messing about with a haldex system.

I was planning to go down this route and this was my initial plan but I still struggle to justify it...
-
You can't really justify that's those problem I thought about this hence why I said what I said sorry dude but IMHO it really ain't worth at all

it does seem alot of effort and work but just thought it would be something diffrent  but reading what you guys are saying maybe its best left FWD and just spend the cash on tuning instead lol
-
definately worth upgrades instead! K04 or K04 hybrid and injectors can get you about 300bhp, and it aint that expensive of a change!
-
Stick with fwd, much less hassle and work.

No no no.. Have a play on Google, plenty of other RWD drive VAG cars from the past and present out there. Maybe not suitable for something like this but there are more than just the beetle.
