Title: Mystery Leak....Tried all the normal things
Post by: pootas on 04 January 2013, 19:38
So recently bought a Golf Mk4 1.8t on an X reg, AUM engine in Oceanic Green.

When I purchased it I knew there were a few things I needed to sort one being a leak. Now I've tried all the normal Mk4 leak solutions:

Door Seals
Inner Door Plate Seal
Pollen Filter Housing Seal
Rear vent seals

The car is a 3 door, no sunroof and only the passenger front and rear footwell get damp. If I feel up under the dashboard the carpet is dry so pretty sure it's not leaking from pollen filter housing. I've drifted door cards off and they don't appear to be leaking. It doesn't have a sunroof so cannot be that!!!

Any ideas? It's driving me insane trying to locate this leak!!!

Had both door cards off today and both appear fine. No obvious water marks etc. It's weird how it's only happening on the passenger side yet effects front and rear footwells...

is the boot flooded? check the spare wheel well for water.

Flooded...Well no

Damp....Yes. Having taken side carpet off I can see water at the bottom under the lights where the rear vents are. I've not dropped bumper off yet but have attempted to silicone seal them from the inside.

I don't think there was enough water to make it's way towards front of the car though!

I got damp in mine too with the usual misting up issues. I have checked all the above too but with no joy

I too have this issue, but I don't have a damp boot floor and no where else is damp either

You say the pollen filter seal is ok but have you checked the pollen filter itself for water damage. Last mk4 leak i fixed it was the plastic scuttle panel that covers the pollen filter, it had a small section broken off it and water was leaking through the pollen filter into the heater box and leaking out into the car causing both front and rear passenger footwells to become soaked. Of course if your pollen filter looks clean then it wont be this.

ive had a leak in my golf aswell done the rear sunroof drains ect and still had damp in the car after drying it out in the rear passenger foot well so started snooping around under the car and found that i was missing a rubber grommet for the rear foot well worth a look at takes 2 secs to spot look under the car and see if theres any grommets missing
