Title: Freesat
Post by: Ant1981 on 04 January 2013, 15:23
Apart from a spare dish on the side of the house, what do I need to do to see if I could use a freesat TV? Will any tv dish work?

Buy a box and give it a try.  It's really not worth it though as Freeview has al the channels Freesat does.

I have freesat and the EPG isn't as good as Freeview as it doesn't show your current channel in the little box in the corner like freeview does.

We've just got Youview which is £5 a month through BT but you don't have to pay for the box.

I had a dish on the side of the house and an aerial that was falling off the roof when I moved into my house, so I went the FreeSat route.  Got a Humax HDD Recorder and it's been pretty good.  Not as many channels as FreeView, but enough.  If you've got FreeSat in your TV, just plug and go I guess...?

If you're going for FreeSat, you just need a dish (it could be any dish, even an ex-Sky dish) and then buy the box.
If you have an unused Sky dish and box, you can phone Sky and ask them for a FreeSat card, which goes into your Sky box and turns it into FreeSat. But you will only get FreeSat channels, nothing else.

Not many TVs come with FreeSat built in, more TVs come with Freeview. But yes, if you have a Freesat TV and a dish, just connect them up.

This is down to the box you use, not the signal provider.
This is one reason the Sky boxes are pants, because you don't get the little picture in the corner while in the EPG.
For example, Humax (who also make the YouView box) make both Freeview and FreeSat boxes, they both have a essentially the same EPG with the little picture in the corner.
If you don't like your EPG, get another box from another maker.

That's one thing I love about my mothers Panasonic Viera, built in FreeSAT HD. One remote to rule them all! and a brilliant picture quality on DVD/FreeSAT HD and non HD programs - but she did pay a high price for that on a 32" telly two years ago ....

There are some reasonably priced samsung (es6540) which have both freesat and freeview. HD tuners. The 40" one is only 599 at John Lewis. I got this the other week and its really good tv. The avengers in 3d is pure awesome.

Shame the freesat epg on the telly is crAp

After we had our Sky installed a few weeks ago, I read one of the pamphlets they send when you order the installation... on this pamphlet it states you can get a Sky dish, Sky+HD box (500Gb) and installation for £120 - providing the installation is a "standard install"

The freesatfromsky.co.uk site no longer exists, but Google has a cached copy here (http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:http://www.freesatfromsky.co.uk/) which says £175, which I'm guessing is the old cost.

A bit of Google found this to be true and loads of info here
