model would be handy, if its a gti then about £15-30 depending on the actual bit you need as there are 2 centre pieces one that is a long pipe thats straight with or without a box towards one end and the next bit is the 2nd box which has a larger silencer on it and connects after the first

1st box roughly £16+vat
2nd box roughly £25+vat

if your after gen parts otherwise check about or ask stuart at eurocarparts he has a section in deals and discounts section check him out

opps :S didnt mean it like that was just stating that you had a cat on ya exhaust on mk3 and you dont on mk2 normally £200 isnt a bad price seen them sell for double that plus fitting  :undecided:

My Vento (with the 8v 2E engine ) when my centre box went ( which was one of those heavy bu66ers ) I replaced it with the centre box from a mk3 1800 that I had to hand as the diameter was the same ,the box was lighter and straight through. which did improve the performance a bit

yeah the 16v middle box is a _much_ bigger diameter that the 8v.. they misfitted it wrong originally and they tried a 8v box when i took it back for a moan..

oh and i was running with a back box for a bit... sounded kick ass!!

might just be the cv joints which arent expensive really dont know about drive shafts never heard of one going but knocking in the steering could be steering colum which are about £45 or over £100 for new/recon

Does yours have a balance weight on the o/s driveshaft as these can come adrift and rattle up and down the shaft or it maybe your inner CV joint that's bu66ered  :undecided:

well i dont no if this is unusual but i thought it was
wheel bearins so i pulled in at service station jacked up the side
where it was knockin n when i turned wheel it was gratin as it went round
dunno if it normally does drivers wheel was on ground as i did this

id go with that

best way to check is lift the front either side and look behind the wheel there be a small shaft from the ball joint behind the wheel leading to the cv joint just check make sure there are no gaps or the bolts arent loose as this can also cause the same symptoms and is very common easiest way to check the steering is for play if driving in a straight line is you move it a few mill left or right the car should move in the correct directions if there is play and no response from the slightest of turns then its had its day.

i just been outside n i grabbed the passenger side shaft and i can move it in n out r they meant to move
Title: Re: centre box
Post by: Rain on 22 July 2005, 19:07
nope
shouldnt move at all should be solid is it in and out movement or sideways

if you think your CV's are f**ked then fut the steering on full lock and drive forward slowly. If you find that they click then they are probably dry or proper f**ked

you might been to drill it its a common problem for them to snap most are snapped changing the pads although im sure there is an easier way ill have alook in a second.

Post by: Rain on 23 July 2005, 14:45
you dont need to remove the caliper at all you just remove the ball joint by removing the bolt in the middle of the disc it should release it all, im goner check and make sure cause i watched a mate do it didnt know what i was doing.
