Title: Recommend me a TV
Post by: Ant1981 on 02 January 2013, 22:53
Ok, may possibly be getting a TV for my room.

Thinking of 40" or 46", but whatever.

A few things I'm not aware of or need clarification of.

Smart TV - is this any that can connect to the innernet via wifi or LAN? What really are the benefits?

50hz too low? 100hz really betterer? More really even betterer?

Can't go wrong with who, Samsung?

Anything else I ought to consider?

Cheers.

You can't go wrong with Samsung in my opinion... All my tvs are.. But as far as smart tv goes it depends if u use Netflix etc the built in apps are handy especially if you have nothing else to connect to a tv in the bedroom like ps3 pc etc... Size will come down to your room mate as depends how big... I have a 40 inch in my bedroom and its just fine.. As for refresh rate ie 50 or 100 have a wee read of this might explain better than me waffling on http://www.avforums.com/forums/tvs/89219-100hz-vs-50hz-tvs.html

Here is a decent 1 fully loaded http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/samsung-ue40es6300-full-hd-40-led-3d-tv-12448397-pdt.html

http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/samsung-ue40es5500-full-hd-40-led-tv-12448374-pdt.html

http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/samsung-ue40es5500-full-hd-40-led-tv-12448374-pdt.html

A few diff models there mate will come down to how much your willing to spend at the end of the day if you have any kind of device like a ps3 or 360 or Apple TV or something then I would be just buying a basic model and use the device for the more smart side features as to be fair so far on my samsung es8000 in the living room I have not used to much of the smart features as I find it slow same on my friends lg quite slow interface

At that sort of size, I'd suggest you go and look at a few and decide if you prefer Plasma or LCD/LED.

I get annoyed as hell by the digital artifacts you get on LCDs, especially on the grass when watching footy on the TV...some people seem to pick up on it more easily - I must be one.
But all my LCD TVs do it (Panasonic & Samsung) whereas my Plasmas don't.

Plasmas also have better black levels...so if movies are your thing, maybe that will sway you.

I have Panasonic & Samsung LCD TVs and Panasonic Plasmas...and to me, I'd pick the Panasonic Plasma every time.

You'll know what looks best to your eyes with a quick look though.

All i would say is make sure the speaker are on the front if your not connecting it to a surround sound.. As i had a lg and the speakers were on the bottom facing down and the sound was horrid.... I now have a 42 inch toshiba and it is great.. Amazing sound quality too.

RE the black levels.

I know they suffered from the back light on LCD, but the LED lighting makes blacks blacker and whites whiter.

How close do you sit to the tele?

Go to currys etc and stand a reasonable length away. I was looking at a 46" plasma and all i could see was pixels. In the end i spend abit more on a samsung 5series 46" LED and happy

These 2 teles where side by side for good comparison

I wouldn't have a plasma anyway.

I've thought Samsung as so many I have seen in peoples houses are really good.

However, I've never ever seen any tv from any technological era in any shop display a sharp crisp image - so I've never been able to buy from a 'what I can see' in store basis.

In currys all tv's are turned up to maximum settings, so not really representative.

Also, "LED" is not LED it is LCD with a back light. Only this month has a true LED tv been released and it is from LG.

50 inch plus = plasma.

Also depends on if you have a light or dark room.

Look on HDTV site for reviews.

Just bought a 42" Panasonic Viera Smart TV.
Was going to buy the 40" Samsung but when we went to buy there were 3 options all lined up together,
(plus a 42" LG ) and we chose the Panasonic on picture quality alone.

Yes but led lit= better range of light and higher saturation of colour!! Led/LCD is still miles better than backlit LCD  And confused what you mean by 50 inch plus = plasma? Lg may be releasing true led but they did not create it

Yep but also the problem with this is especially in a shop is sometimes they compare a 1 yr old model on crap settings with a newer other branded model with correct settings to make it look better!!! As agreeable slick says in currys don't be fooled by what they show u at the end of the day they are working on commission and will sell u what they need sold

Not that I'm saying Panasonic is bad at all because they are amazing tv's I am just loyal to Samsung having worked for them previous and no there quality.. Second to Samsung I would be having a Panasonic bad boy

I realise that, but none of the big players have yet released an LED television. LG are the first this year.

Meaning of 50inch plus = Plasma. Is that anything over 50inch in size is generally speaking plasma's playground. Image quality far far superior to an equivalent LCD(LED) screen.

Basic rules are viewing distance will dictate viable size, and if you have a light room get a LCD, if a dark room Plasma is better.

Agreed.
Buy using the one that gives the best picture...and to my eyes, at 50" (even 42") and above, PDPs give more natural colours, blacker blacks and handle motion better.

Quote

In reality, if using only HD sources, you can double the set size suggested by most traditional thinking.

I agree on the light/dark room comments though.
LCDs go brighter - and often less natural.
PDPs go darker without losing detail.

If you are looking in a shop like Currys, see if you can get the remote and change the picture mode to 'Cinema' if it had one. That's likely to have the closest to natural colour reproduction.

Buy what looks best to your eyes.

I just bought the LG 47LM640T from Currys for £649. 47" of pure awesumz!

I did ALOT of review reading and trawled through the AV Forums before making the purchase.

Very happy with it, well worth the money even without the 3D.

I was going to originally go for the 620 but couldn't resist the 640 with the 5mm bezel, wireless built in wish is handy and has a few extra functionality features over the 620, but the whole range a great TVs.

£650 for a 47" of this spec though is brilliant value.

Not bad considering i paid £999 for my 55" - 620 , i hadn't see the 640 so had to choose between the 620 & the 660  & the extra £289 seemed like a lot when i was already spenfing £500 more than the mrs thought

Luckily I didn't need wireless built in as one of my routers sits on my tv stand so the tv, blu ray player & apple tv are all wired connection, while everything else in the house runs of my airport extreme.

okay...read all your opinions but I'm a Sony man generally and dont need a plasma, so the LED/LCD option is the one that I'm wanting to go with. The thing is the missus has been given £250 tesco vouchers from work so we're thinking makes sense to buy from them and put to a little.

I'm happy with the 32" Sony Bravia KDL 32U3000 that i got a good couple of years ago, as its full 1080p and with the PS3 I get most of the players I need.  But we're changing the front room around and sorting it for a toy free zone leaving them with the older Bravia in the back room and getting rid of the old tube tv that is still going strong.

What would people be suggesting...32" is the preferred size but 40" would fit, and cost cant be over £500? I was thinking this aint bad but its from Trove????? http://www.tesco.com/direct/sony-kdl32cx523bu-32-inch-widescreen-full-hd-lcd-internet-tv-with-freeview-hd/210-7685.prd?pageLevel=&skuId=210-7685 (http://www.tesco.com/direct/sony-kdl32cx523bu-32-inch-widescreen-full-hd-lcd-internet-tv-with-freeview-hd/210-7685.prd?pageLevel=&skuId=210-7685)

Lol the Samsung could be a bog standard LCD and the plasma being 600htz sounds like its a high spec not exactly going to be much of a comparison... People tend to forget each brand has model groups ie sh!te spec mid and high

Bit of an update for you guys and maybe a conversation about new/vs old.

I bought a Samsung UE40ES5500 back in Feb. I put it upstairs in my bedroom.

Downstairs in my living room I have my old Philips 32PW9595 CRT tv.

Now, I've always doubted the quality of the LCD tellies, when I bought it, I thought it looks ok and looks better with HD source.

But now I have brought my CRT over to my new place, compared to my CRT, the LCD truly is rubbish. It's connected to a Tivo box with HDMI and only looks about tolerable if I'm watching an HD channel. Anything else is terribly pixelated and the colour saturation is a joke.

As you can't get the essential parts for CRT tv's anymore, I'll be truly saddened if this one ever stopped working like my last one did.
Title: Re: Recommend me a TV
Post by: Shady Pioneer on 20 September 2013, 11:48
It's something you have to deal with I'm afraid man. CRTs essentially had the right amount of pixels for an SD broadcast and the technology to reproduce the image is completely different to how HDTVs do the same thing.

Ultimately, HDTVs need a HD source to look their best. We will eventually get to a point where everything is minimum 720p but that's a long way off yet.
Title: Re: Recommend me a TV
Post by: damien010685 on 20 September 2013, 12:23
I think the clue would be HDTV!! CRT was the best screen ever for SD

Mines a GT50 and is awesome! I would've loved a VT but couldn't justify the extra 2k for a nicer chassis. LCD tv's are generally pretty crap, we've got a 32" samsung LCD in our bedroom which is tolerable but not great tbh, messing with the settings makes a big difference cos the defaults are terrible! One thing i would recommend is turning off the noise reduction which will reduce the picture trails a bit.

Gotta be Plasma imo, LED's are getting there but are still too expensive for a really good one.

Well all I can say folks,

I have had 2 LG tv's were both design flaws. The most recent being that the plasma that became faulty on the 13th month of purchase (1 months after warrenty), and LG would not entertain me at all without me having to go down the SOGA.

The fault I had was well documented on forums such as AV forum as people were having the same issue but again, LG was not intrested. So hence I will not being buying another LG.

I found with electronic components that its the level of clean environment and software that matters and to be fair I remember about Acer laptops were used as table trays for dinner all because there manufacturing base was not a level 1 clean assembly line.
