Hi I have got some Castrol Edge sport 0w-40 left over from when I had a diesel Bmw. Just wondering if I could use this in my 1995 16v gti?

Yes you can use 0w40, why bloody not?
It's not too thin.... it's only thinner when cold.... and then it is still lots thicker than any 10w60 when it's @ 100 degrees!
If one's car's leaking oil it will leak with any oil... No idea why there's still people who think 0w40 is "too thin"....
As long as it's ACEA A3/B3/B4 (and even C2) and not A1/A5 "fuel saving" sh!t like Ford use it's fine!

Agreed. It's only thinner when cold, as it's the first number that is the cold grade, the 40 represents the viscosity when hot, so it'll have the same viscosity as a 10w40 once warmed up. I use a synthetic 5w40 oil on my car and it's definitely better when cold, especially in the winter. Now, if we were talking 0w30 or 5w30 then yes, that would be too thing, but 0w40? Perfect, so long as it meets the VW approval.

Because it is not the recommended grade, 15/40 semi synth is a much better bet.

It can't be recommended visco cos it wasn't around when mk3 engines were developed ;)
if it fullfills vw 502.00 you can use it, as 502 has supercede vw 500.00. 15w40 is prehistoric stuff I wouldn't pour even into my lawn mower personally.

to me it sounds like you want to use it as top up...... if that's the case then Noooooooo don't use it
if its a drop & change then why not (b.t.w my 180k miler 1.8t runs on 5w30 (without using it!))
