Title: Side Exit Exhaust
Post by: JayzGti on 01 January 2013, 16:00
Has anyone got a side exit exhaust but coming out of the body work, i was watching More than a drive and there was a purple/blue mk3 golf on there with the exhaust coming out of the side panel by the rear rear, this is what im after.
http://www.speedhunters.com/2012/07/a-corolla-with-a-viking-heart/
Its not a problem to do as i can make the exhaust my self, my only problem is it going to be legal.

As long as it does not stick out from body work more than 2" then it's legal body work includes wing mirrors etc...

Whats the best exhaust for the 8v i was thinking of either scorpion or a jetex system then modding it so it comes out of the body work.

Would be a lot of work to make it come out of the bodywork. On both the exhaust and the car! And I'm not sure it would look right. Just my opinion

This.

It's have to run either under the car, then up through the floor and back outside through the rear panel or run from the manifold to the outside all through the inside. There's a reason that corolla has it there.

I think it will look good if done right and its a little different, i got the idea from watching More than a drive and there was a mk3 on there with the exhaust coming out.

Buggers (a police man officer) said as long as it doesn't stick out past the bodywork it's fine. Having said that, I think it looks crap

I guess that includes not carrying any passengers as well seeing as the exhaust will be running inside the car, the heat will cook you as well.

Why not just put it through the sill?

It's something I've thought about for a while.

I'm not having any rear seats any way, i'm putting a cage in the rear.

If its to much hard work to put it through the body work i'll have it coming out of the sill instead

Both ways your going to need to sort the fuel tank which from memory is in front of the beam  :undecided:

Still a daft idea which as I said earlier I very much doubt will be legal.

Couldn't be any more wrong bud. It's right at the back in the middle next to the backbox.

Surely cutting a huge hole in the sill is comprising its structural integrity and asking for a MOT failure?
Title: Re: Side Exit Exhaust
Post by: Screech16v on 03 January 2013, 22:20
Surely not if you sleeve the hole and weld up the ends

I would cut a hole and then get a seamless tube same diameter as the hole then weld that in. Then put the exhaust through that.

Can't see that really affecting structural integrity, but if you do maybe you can explain why.

I don't honestly know if it would or wouldn't.

Along with what happens if a passer by burns a leg etc on it are all things to be considered.

If you think about it, then in lots of ways it is dangerous

Sorry but how is a exhaust coming out the sill (flush with sill) or rear panel any different to a aftermarket exhaust coming out the rear bumper?

Surely if your that close to get burnt then the risk of getting burnt is the same?

Think about it, a rear exit is around the back of the car, side exit will have people on pavements walking past it.

Are you being serious? So a side exit exhausted car will burn pedestrians walking on a pavement as it drives past?
Are you talking about fumes and hot gasses?

Park the car so exhaust is road side. Solution to everything

Also if in a car park the risk of getting burnt is no different from the exhaust exiting the rear.

Your more likely to get burnt from a rear exiting exhaust in a car park because you get walkways at the end of bays.

Unless your refering to people touching the hot manifold when parked up how the hell can you get burned

Exhaust sticking out the back must be dangerous when i park at tesco and people walk behind me

Still daft though

Im going to be cutting a hole in the sill and welding half a pipe in and smoothing it, then exhaust will exit out on drivers side and will only stick out about an inch or so, should look like this when done.
