Hi
Did a lot of miles over christmas period.
on the way back up the M1, after 3 hours of driving in torrential rain, holding 70 ish. had a few moments of hesitation or maybe misfiring.
Not had any problems like this before.
happened about 15 times, just a split second of hesitation and then back to normal.
Standard mk3 8v with drilled airbox.
anyone got any ideas or suggestions please?
Thanks

Coil is a favourite maybe ecu relay 30

Relay 30?
It's a water problem. Wouldn't at all be surprised if water got in the dizzy.
-
Just because it was raining and this fault occured doesn't mean the fault is defo water related
-
First time I've really drive it in the rain. Well monsoon conditions anyway.
Will have a look at those parts

Id have a stab at the coil

Coil, lead and plugs is where I'd start.

Worth checking the crank sensor wiring - its under the oil filter kinda area. Common to see the insulation break down (aka fall apart) and then the rain/spray/puddle cause issues.

Although from my experience of dodgy crank speed sensors is that the engine will cut out completely, not misfire.

From mine it can misfire. Insulation was all good, but the sensor bit that peeps inside the engine had a small crack in it. The only reason I knew it was the crank sensor was because it came up on vagcom as intermittent fault.
-
Ah right ok, mine never showed up a fault code and took bloody ages to diagnose the first time around. Its a possibility then and definitely worth checking.
-
DOH totally forgot about vagcom, I'll give it a blast & report back

No faults shown apart from rear abs sensor which I knew about.
Not had a problem since the rain...

Buy this

I used to have some problems in the rain too. I used this and not had a misfire or hiccup since. This is only effective if what you're sealing has no damage in the first place.

Mine has just started doing this, only when it's chucking it down or I go through a puddle, not happy, it just cost me £350 to get it through the MOT....
I'll be checking the highlighted parts tomorrow, I put a second hand coil pack on it 18 months ago, wonder if it's also giving up the ghost!

Most likely. I had bought a second hand coil after mine had started failing. Lasted 3 months or so before it started failing again! Bought a new one from RAC and it's been fine for over a year now.

When the coil pack failed last time it stalled and wouldn't start again, this time it stalls and starts after 2 or 3 mins, or doesn't completely stall but you get a bit of hesitation..... I'll be having a look on Saturday to see if the crank sensor is at fault too.

keep some wd40 in your car and next time it misses in the rain, spray each part until it stops. the last part sprayed is your fault
(b.t.w if it's not wet damp related it won't help)

Interesting stuff, how do you use it??
My money is onthe coil

wipe any dirt off the components and then just spray it over them. Coil, distributor, HT leads, battery clamps and any other exposed electrical connections, including plugs if you want. What it does is it creates like a very thin flexible plastic layer and protects the components from water ingestion. Since using it I have had 0 problems in the wet.

Nice one
