Title: golf mk4 stuttering & eggy smell?
Post by: golfdan1 on 28 December 2012, 13:37
New member here, I bought a beautiful golf gti mk4 2000 a few months ago and for the past 2 weeks, it has started to struggle and stutter and the car smells eggy but only seems to happen once every day or two only when I am sitting in heavy traffic but the problem goes away when I put my foot down & floor it through a couple of gears

The eggy smell goes away when it goes back to normal and it's running quite rich on fuel

If anyone can shed some light on this or have had this problem please let me know

thank you

Sounds like your engine is pumping unburnt fuel into your CAT

Seems to be happening to a lot of cars at the moment, (mine included) my stuttering was cured by giving the TB a good clean.
Well i got my mechanic friend to do it for me.  :-)

Do you know if these symptoms can be caused by a faulty coil pack?

its possible, get in touch with yours local VW dealer and see if your golf qualifies for a coil pack recall, i was due to have mine changed last week but had to cancel due to other issues with the car.

Mine did that but didn't smell eggy :/ had the coils replaced on recall. Now my MAF sensor is shot and is rough on idle but is ok when I floor it. £121 on exchange from VW though! :(
