Title: mk4 2.0gti climate control blowing cold
Post by: supramad77 on 21 December 2012, 10:02
Well posted a while ago about this with no joy so thought i would try again. Still no joy with the cold air inside the car. The pipes to the bulk head are hot the engine temp is normal the digital controls are operating the levers behind the dash so what else to check. I have put some coolant flush in the header tank to see if it helps. Thoughts on this are blockage in the matrix?
Anywhere else to investigate?

Just cold air, if anything after a good run its luke warm but barely above cold.

Well if the pipes are hot then the matrix is blocked.

Well had a fiddle about today. Took the pipes of the bulk head and put a hose on them. The water seemed to flow out the oppersite pipe going both ways. Strange as i was expecting it not to flow at all. Anyway put it back together and i now have quite warm air. The left pipe is red hot and can't hold it long the right pipe is hot but not as hot. So it seems i have dislodged something from the matrix. Still not working A1 but hell better than nothing. Only down side of the day was i snapped the nipple of the left hand pipe that has a small water pipe that runs back to the head. I have fashioned a temp fix using a metal nipple i cut of something else and drilled it into the damaged connection and glued it in.
Not sure what the part is called or how hard it is to replace. Its a bit of a pain to get at.
I did note that after changing the settings on the climate control on my drive after a run the temp seemed to drop again so might have to have another go and give it a bit more power on the hose next time.
Any thoughts??

Yea did cross my mind as i have one, was afraid it might to powerful and damaage the matrix but think its worth a go at this stage.

Ok more testing done. Took it apart again and blew air and water through. No good at all still cold inside the car. Loads of brown crap came out as i have had a flush agent in there for a week or so. Reading old posts i have noticed the bottom rad hose is staying cold. This indicates a stuck thermostat?
Would this stop flow to the cabin?
One problem i have is the part i damaged the other day that comes out the bulkhead is leaking when cold. Really not sure if this part is replaceable or part of the matrix?
Can someone also tell me where the thermostat is located?
Think it could be on the right side of the block under the air filter?
Thanks for the tips so far.
