Hi guys I'll soon be in the market for a used gti and was hoping for a Edition 35 or R. However I've noticed all 35s in the UK seem to have plain and boring leather seats. Personally I hate leather and much rather have the traditional tartan cloth. I've also noticed that leather is now the only option on the VW configurator, are they mad? It appears that our euro cousins can still spec cloth so why can't we?
I've checked all of the ed35s on Autotrader and they all have the same seats. How insane is this?

I think leather seats are standard for the ED35....You could always buy a 35 and pick up a set of cloth seats from a breaker....

I don't see these seats available?

These are the only seats now available. Which in my opinion look plain and nondescript on a GTI.

Yup only leather available on ED35 but not an issue for me as I like leather. I have kids and they are easier to keep clean. Earlier R's had cloth as std. Another suggestion is get some seats from an ED30 (half leather and tartan, awesome) and put them in the ED35.
-
I've tried all over the web and the VW dealers to buy front seats with the 35 logo on them, however you can't get them in the UK...
The leather ones work for me now....

Run out models in the last year get extra equipment.
It's the vw way.
The mk5 was the same, the last year of production got leather as standard.

I'd hardly consider leather as 'extra' equipment, more of
a personal preference. Looking at MK5s on autotrader i still see tartan cloth on most of the late 2009 models, so not sure what you say is true.
Might have to look at the competition now as I really don't like leather. Do VW regularly commit suicide this way or is it the UK market they really don't give a toss about? Bonkers.

I was simply trying to help inform you why they have slightly more equipment.
I have every mk5 VW catalogue from 2004 on, including price lists, and was also sent a copy of every model year change that normally happens twice a year.
I also have run out model catalogues for the mk1, mk2 and mk3 showing the extra parts fitted to those over previous ones.

These seats look fantastic, like those a lot

+1 I'm afraid, why bother looking at a car which has a std spec you don't like? The embossed 35 seats were the concept for the UK and when they started to run out the gti and gtd they bunged leather in, which meant to keep the 35 in line it got it too.

Exactly

+3.
You could always buy an early R with cloth.

It's not as simple as that though is it. The golf ticks all the boxes in every respect (as it always has). I've owned 3 over the years. A mk3 driver, mk4 gt Tdi 130 and a mk5 gti which is my current motor.
My next motor I wanted to push the boat out a little and get something a little special. The seats are important and I love the tartan cloth, the mind boggles why VW would produce an anniversary model and not offer this as a default option. They got everything right with ed30 but seems they've failed to achieve the same levels with the 35. Not saying that the 35 is technically inferior because its not, infact it's the opposite. Those concept seats look stunning! I'd gladly waver the tartan for those, they're amazing. At the end of the day if you're spending your hard earned cash on a new motor, you'd at least expect a couple of options. How would you feel if 17" monzas where the only wheels on offer? We're all human and we all want different things. I'll probably still buy one but I'll always feel flat about those mundane seats.

don't get me wrong i wanted the 35 alcantara trim as love the Pirelli trim in the wife's but i was over it in about 10 minutes of getting the thing, trick they missed was using red stitching on the leather
in reality the fact they didn't colour code the rear diffuser was the most annoying thing about the car

Hi, I'm new to the site & currently looking for a mk6. The Jacara cloth seats have become an issue with my darling Wife, she hates them, (remind her of picnic rugs & scotch eggs!) I, however, love them! I begrudge having to narrow our search for a leather clad Gti when there are currently some great used bargains with the iconic cloth! Great site with a huge pool of info by the way!

Who's paying for the car Nige?

Both of us! She loves our A3 2.0Tfsi Quattro & sees the Golf as a step backwards! I hoping a diamond for Xmas will swing it for me!

Good luck and if not sell the diamond and treat ya self to a car with leather!

Got to agree, I would love red stiching on the leather but it would cost too much to sort it.
I had my rear diffuser sprayed.....

I think the tartan seats in my old GTI were the best seats I've ever had. Sure, they're a little chavvy, but in a cool retro way :p
I now have a Scirocco (mid-life crisis) and the leather is, well, a little bland, but each to their own.
What I would like are those recaro's in the tartan cloth - they look sweet!
