Title: Winter tyres fitted wheel scuffed!
Post by: MonkeyP on 19 December 2012, 21:28
Got my winter tyres fitted today! Wow what a difference it makes. cars really holding the road!

Unfortunately they scuffed the wheels while they ran some chemical on a tissue over them! the car was dirty but seriously they did every wheel. the main guy was useless saying that wasnt from the machine but i told him that i clean my wheels most week so i know new marks. he was adamant that i had caught a curb which i know i hadnt and in the end i had to leave as i needed to get baq to work!

i only think that it was one guy that caused the problem but i wasnt able to prove it. i did see him putting a lot of energy into it but i think he was using the metal bar instead of the wooden one.

There was one guy that was helpful (he used to run a show rs2000) and obviously he didnt agree with me but he didnt disagree with me either but there was nothing he could do.

In the end i left and just will give them a polish in the warmer months as i know there will be more damage over the winter months.

I got the tyres at a good discount but i will not be be using them again. i will buy the tyres and just pay someone else i trust to fit them.

Has anyone else had problems when they get their tyres change on the monzas?

Damn man  that's a real shame to hear, who did you use?...when I first put rubber on my Shadows I told the fitters that they were brand spankers and that I have taken pics of all wheels and I also made then aware of the cost...that put the frighteners into them and admitted that there machine wud probably rip them to shreds so they swiftly sent them down to Bathwick tyres and they came back spotless...

Name and shame bud...

as i said i think that it was only one guy that messed it up! It was a kwick fit but the guy that sorted me out the deal used to work there is reliable and about his advice so i think that i was very unlucky.

Gonna have a word with him on friday. I think the damage was done when they were "cleaning" 2 weeks of dirt of the wheel.

Does anyone know if they wheels are lacquered cos then i can give them a polish with a DA and some scholl s17+

The last 3 wheels I have had punctures / tyres fitted have all been damaged!!
1 was on the inside where obviously the jaws of their machine gripped the wheel without protection so took big chunks out. They also took the weights off with what looked liked screwdrivers so there were big scores around about the old weights. I took my wheels back to the place and the owner agreed that yes they had damaged them and would get them repaired but given they were diamond cut I changed my mind and never went back. Tried to sort it myself.

Another was a main dealer, while my car was in for a service I asked them to repair a puncture. Alloy was scuffed to hell. Its as if they put the face of the alloy down on gravel and then slid it about. They denied it of course even although every other wheel was in mint condition. I managed to machine polish this out.

Lastly took my wifes alloy in for a puncture repair and it came back with 3 big scores over the face of the alloy. I thought he was acting suspicious when he couldn't wait to get the wheel into the boot ASAP. I never even went back as I was just so p!ssed off. I just won't ever use those 3 places again.

I've had far too much damage happen to my cars / alloys when in the hands of garages for it just to be a bit of bad luck. I think they don't give a fcuk while your car is with them. I've decided any future tyre / puncture repair, I will take the wheel off the car myself, present it to the fitter and show him the condition of it. Ask him if he can do the work without damaging it and if he says he can I'll give them the job. That way they will be aware of how serious you are.

Also, any work on the actual car, I'll be doing the same by asking them to come and inspect it with you before it is booked in. If they say no I'll go elsewhere.

I'd happily pay more to know that they actually take care than just batter on in. Things like covering the wings with protection sheets if working in the engine bay rather than leaning over scratching the wing with the zip from their overall. I had that in the 80's on an XR2 that was in for some work. What a mess they wings were.

I think the more paranoid / anal you are about your car, the worse it is. The fact I don't park in car parks any more and am extremely cautious about everything about it, obviously makes me heightened to any wee mark the garage puts on it.

When I took my recently acquired Audi into the garage for some warranty work, I was met in the car park by a valet service. I was really dubious about letting him park it as I don't do side by side parking. Nose to toe is fine, anyway I gave him the keys and watched him, he had an SLR camera around his neck, parked my car then proceeded to take some pictures. Obviously to check for any damage the customer claims happens at the dealer. Now that is my kind of service

Agree 100%

The main guy was great as so where all the worker. the main guy told be exactly what they were going to do to make sure there wasnt any damage to the wheels but i think the message wasnt passed to the one person that did most the work.

I need to start taking pictures of the car when i give it to someone and make sure its clean cos then any floor will show up!

Gonna give it a proper clean this weekend and put a few coats of sealant to help mask the damage for a bit. will give them a polish in April.

Kwik Fit and similar employ pretty basic people who won't really care for your wheels. I know it generally costs more and a lot of you have had dealer problems and don't trust yours, but I always think you're better off having tyres done at a main dealer.
I damaged one of my Monza's through stupidity by accidentally dropping it face down on a concrete floor when putting the spare on after a puncture [on my previous GTI] I went to my dealer to price up a new wheel and whilst there also mentioned to warranty manager that there was a tiny bit of whiteworm showing on one other wheel [about a 2mm dot near the centre cap] and could they replace that under warranty at the same time? They gave me two new Shadows and fitted the tyres completely FOC [I just had to pay for a tyre to replace the punctured one] Now that's what I call a result, and because of that I would always use that dealer.

There is only one man that I will trust to fit my tyres. It means a near 60 mile round trip, but it's worth it to me.

He has invested a lot of money in a machine that doesn't touch the rim of the wheel at all. Neither the inside or outside. People travel from far and wide with their supercars, his reputation is that good.

Spill the beans then! If he's that good i'm sure he wouldn't mind a little "word of mouth"

thats bad luck. im dreading the day i need tyres swapped on my car!

ive had wheels scratched a few times, once at kwik fit years ago, my clio 182 from ATS, my clio 197 from halfords auto centre and my GTI from the main dealer

i wasnt so bothered in my younger years but i was well p!ssed off with the state of my clio 197 wheel they refunded me £60 for a refurb.

the main dealer gave me a brand new wheel and tyre.

im super anal about my car so always catch the mechanic when he brings the car round and walk round it with him now.

of course each time ive had a wheel scratched they have denied it though.

Do you know what the machine is called or how that works so I can search for something near here?!

I'm sure people would be willing to pay extra to guarantee there wheels are damage free.

Machine look insane. Really want one. Lol.
