Hey guys, great forum, just joined and need some help
Firstly I've just got the gti off my mate, he claims its 16v but I'm positive it's 8v as it has rod gear linkage not cable.
Anyway to verify this?
Secondly the gear stick had a fair amount of play and the reverse gear keeps popping out and grinding.
So after a bit of google searching, found that the linkages get worn over time so bought a new refurb kit.
All fitted fine no problems, very easy to do, now here's my second problem.
It was still grinding and popping out so tried adjusting the linkages and now I'm having major dramas getting it into the right gears.
At times I can select reverse at the gearbox and it works fine, but that is rare.
So my questions are
How would I adjust it properly to get all gears again
And would this fix my reverse problem or is the problem worse than the linkages
Thanks for any input, hope you guys can help as I'm stuck on my parents drive with no car :(

Sounds like you need a new box pal, and to determine if its 16v, does the inlet come over the top of the engine, or is there nothing that comes over the top of the engine?

Well all the other gears were fine with no problems, so I wouldn't think the box was fubar
I don't think there is anything going over the engine, it's pretty clean and tidy though

Post a picture of the engine & we'll soon tell you if it's 8v or 16v, although the easiest way is by looking at the clocks;
140mph = 8v
160mph = 16v
As for the gearbox, reverse gear is notorious on Mk3's and unfortunately a new/reconditioned box is probably the best way forwards.

I'd say it is a 8v simply because you got problems with reverse :grin:
I also think its the box

You learn something new everyday, I had no idea about the clocks.

Just checked, it is 8v
Now, reference the box, so it may be shagged, I can handle having a duff reverse for now.
Does anyone know to to re align the lever and rods to select the gears properly?
Cheers

I drove for 40k with a naffed reverse gear, just hold it in or be more gentle with it and keep the revs down :grin:
When the rivets on the diff let go its time for a new box, could be next week could be the new owners problem :lipsrsealed:
Trogs line up tool is wondeful
