Title: Thermostat Issue
Post by: stfc_gti on 16 December 2012, 17:09
I have had an issue recently where my thermostat wasn't working, the temp gauge was always showing below 80, so ive had my thermostat and a few other bits replaced but now the temp guage gets up to 90 very nicely and sits there but after about 10 minutes it will rise and rise and get to about 110 and then depending on how fast I am going it will fluctuate between 95 and 110/115. (the faster I go the higher it goes) should I be worried the car is over heating or has my mechanic missed something?

Thanks in advance.

You got heat coming out when You put on your heaters? Sounds like temp sender which Is 13 quid. Water pump looking into £200+ :lipsrsealed: would not jump to that till all cheap options are Rulled out

I've just checked the invoice and the sender was changed too.

when I got into the car today, it did take a while for hot air to come out of the heaters.

it should do, but from reading your original post something is wrong with the thermostat

Even though it's been changed? I'll just have to drive her carefully and get her looked at again at next weekend.

Yeah it shouldnt go anywhere near 100-110 so unless you have an air lock in the system somewhere, have you checked that all the pipes that carry coolant can be compressed? just grab the top and bottom hose off the radiator and squeeze them and watch for the coolant in the expansion tank moving... when you squeeze them a few times

so this morning the STOP check coolant warning came back up again, and the temp guage is still getting very high when driving on the motorway. reading some past posts im led to believe it may be the water pump. I believe someone pointed this out a few posts back
Gonna try and get it back in the garage tomorrow if I can sort out another car to use.

So she's back in the garage, on my way home from work to the garage i had no heat comming from my heaters, and although i topped up the coolant level after 5 minutes of driving the STOP Check coolant warning re appeared. Being a wet day i couldnt really tell if i had a leak.

Any ideas what the prognosis might be?

easiest way to test the pump is to take the top hose off the coolant bottle (when the engine is off), hang the hose or get someone to hold it in the expansion tank top and then start the engine, you should get a steady stream.....

I wouldnt know where to start, im gonna leave this to the pro's
Im probably going to getting rid soon anyway, or if i can afford it, have it as a weekend run around, i just cant afford the petrol with my commute.

No better time to learn, save yourself a load of money too
I use mine as a weekend toy and the odd commute to Wales to see family, but thats only because I have a company car.

Honestly get a Haynes manual and a decent socket set like a Halfords Pro and get stuck in mate, I personally havent done one yet, but my cambelt is due in the next 10K so I'll be doing it as a matter of course, plenty of people on here to ask if you get stuck

i think having a second car would leave me more inclined to have a go at things a bit more knowing there is the fall back of having another car, at the moment i cant risk not having a car.

If you change the water pump, make sure it has metal teeth not plastic dude

New ones are made of a different composite so aren't as fragile as the old type. I'd rather the impellor break off than a metal one seize, I've repaired the damage that it can cause and it's not pretty

The metal impeller wouldn't seize as it's the shaft that rotates the impeller, plus the shaft is metal wheather or not the impeller is plastic or not.

Drove her properly for the first time since having her back, and temp gauge sits nicely at 90 degrees. Larvly!!!
