Title: mk2 8v gti earthing problems???
Post by: Kramonket on 14 December 2012, 12:14
Just bought an 8v gti. Which has a few electrical problems and I was wondering if they're a related earthing fault.

Fault 1. When I indicate in either direction. All indicators flash.

Fault 2. Heater blowers don't work. But the car does get warm eventually.

Fault 3. No instrument lighting.

Fault 4. The rev counter dies occasionally.

Any ideas in fault finding that lot?

Cheers Mark.

No.1 is possibly a stalk problem.
No2 could be fuse, switch, speed resistor or fan itself. Start at the switch with a mulimeter.
No.3 may just be lamps or thumbwheel turned to minimum.
No.4 may be earth fault.
Or the whole bl@@dy lot, with the possible exception of No.1, could well be earths.
Good luck.

I ve had the wire fall out the back of headlight switch plug before which lost dash lights.
Does the mfa work? Rev counter and mfa are linked somehow. If it doesn't work then it's new clocks time
