Title: engine starting nightmare
Post by: ...joe on 19 July 2005, 21:58
hey guys, last week my car wouldn't start properly, after a bit of perseuasion it started then ran fine. i got it up to temperature and cleared the ecu drove it for about 45 mins, about an hour later i went out and drove it again for about half an hour. no problems.

i've just started it up fine, then it stalled and now it wont start. it turns over, sometimes fires, but cuts out. it doesn't seem to like revving but needs it to get it going. when it does fire and you rev it, it sort of bogs then cuts out.

bear in mind this is a newly rebuilt engine so it could be a few electrical things. i checked the timing and its spot on. its getting fuel, the rotor arm and cap have marks but i'm going to get new ones tomorrow, other thoughts are blue water temperature sensor? knock sensor? any ideas chaps as i want to take this up to bugjam on friday so would need to get it sorted asap!!!!!

blocked / knackered injectors? When you drive it does it jolt / jump, that would point to electrical rather than fueling.

yeah i was thinking it might be the afm, but didn't want to have to get another one.

as a subplot, i noticed my alarm wasn't flashing the indicators when it locked/unlocked and just now it went off and i couldn't shut it off? clifford concept 600 if anyone knows anything about alarms! anyway to re-set them?

just thought, can you start the engine without the blue sensor plugged in? that could eliminate that? can i get it from gsf or is it a main dealer thing only ? arrrgh!!! makes a change asking the questions for once!

well i got a new rotor arm and a bosch distributor cap, ordered the blue temp sensor. fitted the dizzy parts and it started first time, i went for a drive and it was all perfect, but i'm still not 100% confident that it's as it should be. been trying to gte it booked into a garage to get the mixture tested/adjusted but my local guy is super busy! i tested the afm as per the haynes manual and it seems fine, the readings on the multimeter are pretty much as they should be so with any luck its nothing to serious.

fingers crossed, but any other suggestions more than welcome!

hey dude.... one thing i would check and its not totally related to the issues you have had... is the co settings now u have changed the cam.

an dblue temp sensors always get them from main dealer.... well i do as gsf ones alway seem to go fookin wrong! and yes u can start the engine without temp sensor plugged in but the cold start wont cut in so u will have to rev it to keep it running...

What engine is it Joe?

You could always pop into any MOT centre and bung em a tenner to test the C0 and adjust it suit i guess? i might do this my self :)
