So the anoying noise coming from my car somewhere near the front under hard acceleration, is it a rattle or a misfire? How do i spot a misfire?
-
Car has no power
-
Its my first gti and its a 8v so i have nothing to compare it to? Ive changed the plugs and ive got ht leads and a dissy cap to fit when i get a chance. It doesnt seem to wanna go past 85mph and does 3100revs at 70mph so ive no clue if its a misfire?
-
That is not good!!!
Your car should do 90mph in 3rd.
I suggest you change the leads and cap right away. Give the rotor arm a good scrub with a bit of sand paper or wire wool.
-
90mph! in 3rd?! A 97 8v gti? Really? If thats the case my cars proper f**ked lol leads and cap it is then. Watch this space. ..
-
Yes mine certainly does. Maybe get the rotor arm also.
-
Ill do the dissy cap n leads first. Wouldnt know what to do with a rotor arm, how to clean it, sand it etc let alone fit a new one. Hopefully what ive got will sort it. Hopefully ill get a chance saturday to do it
-
Usually a rattle is there all the time, whereas a misfire maybe intermittent

i agree with tweed, mine does 90mph in no time, and I've had mine at 135mph with ease.
-
so if thats the case why does everyone on here diss 8v's?

An accurately calibrated LIDAR speed gun would say otherwise. Vehicle odometers generally read over your actual speed.

An 8v will do 125mph max!
-
I had a well looked after 8v and the chance of getting to 90 in third would have been 0..

Possibly, But i've had mine at 135MPH, Very Scary...

Maybe yours was not well looked after'd after all...
-
I had a well looked after 8v and the chance of getting to 90 in third would have been 0..
Mines had 8 services in 25,000 miles and a cam. Do 100mph in 3rd if I removed the limiter and fitted a turbo
-
Well since ive bought it in October mines had a full cambelt n tensioner kit change, oil m oil filter change, air filter change, new NGK BUR6ET plugs put in, all the fluids topped up, 2 tanks of Shell Vpower and a cleaning additive put through it, and once the new dissy cap and ht leads get put on thats me done. Thats the limit of my funds and knowledge. If it aint running right after this weekend im outta options
-
I'm pretty sure I read somewhere ages ago that thrashing the engine once in a while is good for the engine, as it helps clear out all the crabon being bulit up.
But before you start thrashing, make sure everything is running right And engine is at it's optimum level to be opend up
and i aint a boy racer who likes 1st & 2nd gears only. Its 3rd gear upwards for me

Mines got 160k on it and does 90 in 3rd easy, speedo/nav confirmed..........
-
so if thats the case why does everyone on here diss 8v's?
Because it takes about 2 days to get to that 90mph in 3rd

 the speed isn't the problem, its the acceleration.

I dont believe it!

I've had my clocks at that too

It sounds like, its only me & Tweed, who have really pushed an 8V GTI to its limit...
-
Well I think that your 8v clocks are reading very, very optimisticly!
-
At top speed the Mk3 is quite stable not scary at all, a Mk2 at 135mph borderline brown trousers
The windscreen used to vibrate into a fuzz from 125 to 130 then go clear.....
I was quite foolish as a young lad :lipsrsealed:
-
So back to my point, if it is a misfire and the new plugs leads and dissy cap dont fix it, except for a new rotor arm what do i do next?
-
Get a code reader on it!
-
So yeah, new ht leads n dissy cap fitted along with the new plugs. Rotor arm sanded down too but nope! Still a rattle under load/acceleration? Ideas lads?
-
You need to tell us if its a rattle or misfire.
We can only help/advise what to do from what you tell us. You need to go out in your car. Take a friend and try to identify what the problem is.
Rattle or misfire is like chalk and cheese.
-
I dont have enough knowledge to know what it is. If i did i wouldnt be here

I know what's wrong with my car but I still don't know what the source is.
Get a mate or member of family and ask them what they think it is.
-
MAF sensor.
Unplug it and see if it runs any better.
Noise might just be the sound of a cracked exhaust manifold leaking
-
Have to agree 90 in third and had my 8v way off the clocks
-
Ive had exhaust checked apparently its fine. What n wheres the maf sensor?

Nice pic. Which ones a maf sensor?
-
Nice pic. Which ones a maf sensor?
Air mass meter
-
So unplug the maf sensor and car will run fine? Hmmm so if it works do i even replace it? They sem to be £70 odd and with fitting that £100 easy. Hmmmmmm
-
If it works fine when its unplugged then replace it. Try a second hand item and do it yourself. Only two screws.
-
Had a wiggle at it this morning, how do i remove it exactly?
-
Ok disconnected sensor. Did a few miles. Same rattle. Same performance?! Next idea?!
-
How many miles it done?
Does it rev past 5000rpm? Or does it hit a rev limit at 5000rpm?
-
Its done 148k not sure about the revs? I think it goes past 5k tho not drivin for 3 days now tho
-
check heat shield right at the back and down in middle , covering the exhaust.
-
Start it up let it warm then put your foot flat on the throttle untill it hits the limiter
-
check heat shield right at the back and down in middle , covering the exhaust.
If that is it, you can put a few jubilee clips together round it and tighten it a bit, that stopped mine.

-
Heat shields were first tings i checked. All solid
-
So if it does stop at 5000rpm what the problem? (havent tried yet)
-
If the engine won't pass 5k revs it would generally point to a timing issue and mean that the ECU has gone into 'safe mode'
-
And haven't you replaced the timing belt recently?
-
The timing belt was replaced recently but the car was like this before..
-
Just tried it. Stuck it in neutral and reved to 7000 no probs so not timing or safety mode! Still rattling/misfiring under acceleration. Its also cut out at idle in traffic once or twice now too? Really frustrating me
-
I'm starting to run out of ideas mate.
Only thing I will suggest now is fuel pump relay
-
Thinking its just a rattle now, took the car out on a nice long rong today 120 miles :tongue:had a few chances to smack it around a bit and easily did 80mph in 3rd 3-4 times, so im guessing its not misfiring
-
What a cock!
-
