just want to know what the downsides are to owning one!! i know with soft tops that you loose some power but with the mk1 gti is it that noticeable? basically any info on them as if i do buy 1 i want to know exactly what im letting myself in for as it would be my 1st soft top
-
What do you want to know jay ? They are not as fast as a mk1 tintop but I love mine, see past all the hairdresser jokes and you'll love it too. Downsides are the risk of someone ripping the hood but other than that the threats are the same as any other car, just get a good alarm and a crook lock and hope for the best because if some little scroat comes along with a stanly knife there's jack you can do about it.
Just for a comparison, I raced a tintop down the strip at santapod at GTI festival the other week and I was doing him at 60ft, he was just slightly in front of me at 330ft and by the end of the 1/4 I did it in 17.2 and he was something like 15.8 so in reality a second and half on the road wouldn't be that much.

cheers gibby, thats what i thought.

Go for it mate, like Gibby said not as fast as a tintop, but still pretty quick
-
Whats the handeling like in comparison with a tintop?
-
i find that the handling is just as good but feels very heavy :shocked:get used to this though and your fine :smiley:i've owned both and cant decide which is best buy 2 one of each
-
ok folks can u tell me the differences between a rivage, normal gti convertible do all softtops come with power hoods or are they the more exclusive models.
-
Where to start !
All the cabbies came with power hoods from about 88(ish). The Rivage has a mohair roof, slightly tinted windows, leccy windows, leccy hood, heated front seats. Green Rivage's all had cream leather interior, some of the blue ones did, but not most of them. The Sportline had leccy hood and Recaro seats but didn't have heated seats or leccy windows as standard and they didn't have mohair hoods either, not sure if they had tinted windows either. I think most GTI's had a similar spec to the Sportlines but without the Recaro's. If I think of anything else I'll let you know.

Just don't buy a clipper if your after performance, they don't know the meaning of the word!
I know I don't intend to sell my cabby for a LONG time if that means anything.

  Right then, I've got a Clipper with direct Weber carb replacement. 0-60 9.95 1/4 17.5 seconds . Gibby's GTI 1/4 mile was 17.2 so not true
Also, like to point out that my low performance clipper beat a GTI cabriolet on the rollers back in February too. BHP and torque :lipsrsealed:
Throw the peirberg carb away on yer purple MK1 Clipper and get a weber, It'll be just as quick as a GTI then

Rivages and sportlines tend to hold ther value, and if you find a nice one you'll have youself a nice car,but if money's an issue buy a normal gti and do it up. i agreee don't buy a non gti there verrrrrrrrrrrrrry slow
-
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention the main bits, the Rivage had 15" Le Castellette wheels as standard and the Sportline came with BBS something or others as standard.
-
^ black centred 15" bbs ra's on the sportline (geek)
:)

clippers are not slow, bronze's clipper is just as fast (if not faster) then a GTI.
i was shocked the first time i drove his just how quick it was, then i remembered the good old std mk1 brakes as we came speeding into the roundabout lol

yeah same as mine, but don't think he's had the weber conversion. It's an F plate I think and he wants £1800 for it.
-
for that sort of money would deff get the gti, i know the philosophy of cabs that if u got the hood down why the hell do you wanna drive so fast well i dont want to get beaten off the light by a micra

Well done !
As for the cabby, it depends on how much you want to spend, I'd personally go for a later Rivage (no surprise there then) or a Sportline. Again personal opinion, but I think the Rivage looks classier if you get the leather interior etc and the Sportline looks sportier. If you look around you can pick on of these up for just between 3 - 4k mark.
Rivages here varying in price from 3k to 6k

Sportlines here (although the second one is not a sportline as they only did them in red and black)

Cost me £195 brand new for the weber and paid £60 for the bolt on K&N filer. Think I paid around £60 to have it fitted. I know you can pick up second hand webers for around £80. I'll be selling mine once I've had my 16v conversion.
Last rolling road day the power was 110 bhp and 128 torque at the flywheel. The standard GTI cabby that went on the rollers that day was 107 bhp and 102 torque at the flywheel  The operator was quite shocked that a carb model would put out more power than a GTI
