Title: Early MK2 16v (Put a deposit on her last night !!!)
Post by: davidhawkins_78 on 19 July 2005, 12:13
Morning all !!

After looking at a few Golfs - nearly getting stung with a clocked J plate valver I'm off to look at yet another one tonight

It's a 1988 Golf GTI 16v in Monza blue - small bumpers etc. Pretty standard but unmolested with 90k on the clock, so a good base :)

Can anyone help me out with some details as to what the spec of these small bumper 16v's where ??

Any engine differences - ride height - brakes etc and should there be anything electric ( leccy windows would be nice u see  ) from a later valver ?

Cheers in advance

The bastud didint even have power steering.

Nice colour choice Dave

brakes on a pre 89 mk2 16v use the same as the 8v gti, after that the discs/calipers are bigger/uprated and also has a bigger master cylinder.

The inlet manifolds changed around the 88' mark, originally they were 45mm ports, then they changed to 50mm, not sure what the gains were but im sure vw didnt do it for nothing!!

PAS was an option, as was Air Con at one point, ive seen old small bumper 16v's with out leccy windows so wether they were and option or the ones ive seen with had them removed for weight!! lol

i cant think of owt else.

oh yeah early ones had normal back lights none of the half smoked stuff goin on!! lol

id just like to add........

guess whos just got himself a 3dr 89 oak green valver...........

Cheers lads

I've kinda got my hopes up about this one too, probably isn't a good idea after some of the over priced tripe I've seen lately!

I'll keep you all posted tomorrow as to how things go!

Dave.

its a perfect base as long as its been cared for.

pre 89 16v's have the 239mm setup the same as 8v's
ive never seen an original 16v that doesnt have a 50mm inlet. the smaller inlets where developed for the later 2.0 9a block afaik

88 was the year of the campaign also but im near enough sure that colour didnt feature in the campaign series. u'll know if its a campaign cause it'll have the later rainbow interior and half tint rear lights.

electrics are a tricky one!! electric windows should be standard along with central locking. but power steering was an option

engine wise. they have a different airbox and different con rods and crank as ive no found after dismantling mine - but nothing u need to worry about!!

they also have better engine loom sleeves, plastic rather than ticker tape type in late spec!

you also have carpeted rear suspension turrets in the boot. late spec cars didnt have this - they had crap foam

the early spec 16v's are a better built car believe it or not!!

if it has got small brakes etc id check the sticker in the boot just to be sure it started its life as a 16v!!

Well as the title of the thread now reads unless anything major comes back from the MOT on saturday i'll be picking her up in a weeks time - I can't wait !!

Turned out to have smoked rear lens - leccy mirrors and windows, no PAS but I can live with that - my old 8v was the same after all.

In only went in the trader yesterday morning and very kindly, seeing as I was the first phone call, the current owner gave me first refusal. he had people offer to buy it over the phone without even seeing it  OK a good valver with low miles is getting quite hard to find, but I still don't think I'd go that far!

Here's a piccy from the ad - VERY standard looking I know, but that will change ... ohhh and fook me it was quick; the current owner doesn't think it's had anything done to it but it pulled like a train

Is there any way from the Chassis number to know if it's a Campaign edition too ??

Good man. Welcome back !

Don't think it's a campaign model though. It should have 14" Le Castelletes if it was, but I guess they could have changed the wheels.

Looks good.
How much is that costing?

I like the early/small bumper look.
Kinda like my old 89 16v, that had electric windows and central locking, but no pas.

Nice.

Given the overall condition / history etc a very good price

She's sub 100k too :)

Just above the book price actually, but they don't reflect the demand for them in my mind.

I'll tell you guys more when I actually have her - I don't want to tempt fate !

My 16v is an 88 and has EW, manual sunroof + mirrors, central locking and no PAS think it was an option back then! apparentley the monza blue has a slightly different more powerful engine but don't know if thats a viscious rumour!!!

As far as I know there weren't any differences re power/colour .
The only difference I believe is that the earlier 16Vs ( KR engines) had different sized inlet manifolds to the later ones :undecided:

Lol ... I'm not stranger to that - but I've got enough experience myself and a wicked local Mk2 specialist that mosts things can get sorted without selling body parts!

Could be worse though - I could have bought a Vauxhall !

I agree on the deep pockets!! definitley worth it tho and old mk2 16v's tend to be a bit quicker ;)
