Title: Oh the joys of Christmas!
Post by: Len on 07 December 2012, 20:57
Very shortly I have to go and write out and address the Xmas cards!

Then tomorrow me and the wife are going to Bath for the Christmas market and find her a prezzie!

Sunday am picking up both our Dads and taking them on the Cemetry run, to put wreaths at their wives graves. (our Mums)

Bit of a mixed bag what?

Life's a weird one that's for sure Len. It'll be me and my wife's second Christmas without our baby boy. I'll be thinking of you fella.

I lost my Dad 4 years ago next week, by anyones account, he was an extraordinary man, what he got up to in WW2 was simply mind boggling!
My farther in law also passed tragically 2 years ago next March, another amazing story, while less than 6 years old, he was forced to walk with his mother, brother and sister, from a Siberian Concentration camp, to Kenya!

For any parent to witness the passing of their own child, is beyond words... I hope you have fantastic memory's of your son, but can also look forward to the future

That is quite unbelievable Thom, Siberia to Kenya at any age, but at 6 years old! We just don't know how easy we've got it these days. Just unbelievable....

I'll be thinking of you too next week whenever it may be, losing your father, especially if you have a strong relationship with one another, it must be incredibly hard to come to terms with. Seems we're all having a bit of bitter/sweet Christmas this year and maybe for a few more to come!

We don't really have any memories of little Alfie, as we only held him for a few hours. I've always tried to weigh up what's worse - The chance to have loved and to have lost your child, or never having had the chance to have loved at all?
I don't suppose I'll ever figure it out, nor do I suppose it will ever have any life impacting relevance for me or my wife.
We do have a wonderfully bright future ahead of us, so for that I am eternally grateful. We have a beautiful little 3 year old girl and another little girl due in the next ten days. We also moved down to Devon earlier this year and currently reside in the next village to where Alfie is buried, so our family is in the vicinity.

I feel the same with new year. My dad was rushed to hospital at about 00.30 new years day 2005, was in intensive care until he died on the 15th. We all kept a bedside vigil obviously. I've not been out for new year since. It must be even worse for my Nan and Mum, but I couldn't bring myself to ask them. Very sobering, and not a time I can get excited about any more.

in a couple of weeks time it will be 24 years since I boarded a C130 to fly to Lockerbie

 and start the worst,

but also some ( and people wont understand this ) most memorable weeks of my time on a section in the RAF that was nicknamed " Crash n Smash " . I was the ripe old age of 17

So Xmas has some fcuked up memories for me,

Add in my step daughter is a Xmas Day Birthday Girl.

Try sorting out those emotions

My brother was called up to Lockerbie Chuff, at the time, he was a volunteer with the north York moors/peak district emergency search and rescue team, and were of course summonsed straight away, I think they were up there for about a month, he's never really said much about it, other than an experience he'll never forget...
To this day he carries around with him, in his wallet a piece material that made up the interior wall structure of the 747...

No worries Len, as far as I'm concerned, it does no harm to reflect a little as the year draws to an end...

But did you try it after not eating properly for nearly 2 years, and walking with no shoes!

Nowhere near as severe as Thom's Dad but my Dad went to Burma during WW2 as a Gun Aimer. Ended up with dysentry and beri beri and got sent back to India to convalese which took 6 months by which time the war was over.
I might add he joined up late because he was a Policeman, but decided he wanted to do his bit when his brother got killed on a mine sweeper (it hit a mine)
