hi i have a mk5 golf gt 2.0fsi and i have wanted a r32 for a long time and me and the mrs have a couple of ppi claims each going through so looking to trade the golf in with the big wad of cash we got coming, which is the best one i prefer the the mk4 but really like the sound of the dsg box in the mk5,i will be using it as a daily so i want to lpg it,if it would be compatible with lpg as my work mate has a 330ci with lpg and cost him peanuts to run, anybody gone from a mk4 r to a mk5 r
-
id keep the gti :lipsrsealed:
-
its not the gti its the same engine just without the blower on it and its only 150 bhp so not that quick tbh and dont like the 29 mpg as my old vr6 did better than that
-
Then get the tfsi and remap it.
Even topgear boys said mk5 gti over r32
-
Wud you lose the gorgeous sound of the MK5 R32 if you LPG it?
-
it would still make the same epic noise just cheaper to run at 70p a litre, and i dont want a 4 pot tbh as i like big torquey v6's
-
More torque from a remapped tfsi engine
Why you think they stopped making them and went with a mk6 tfsi r?
But if I was to choose from the two, it would be 100% mk5 r32
-
my mate has a 57 plate blue s3 tfsi and its fast but sounds pants compared to a r32 or the audi rs3 5 pot
-
Mk5 Gti remapped (capable of 32/33mpg) or Mk5 R32 standard and less powerful (Capable of 25mpg)
-
I will be more helpful. It depends what you want out of the car.
Both will offer that amazing V6 noise, and give you real grunt and low down torque you get from a proper N/A monster. The Mk4 is a slightly simpler beast, and is less likely to cost the earth in repairs.
The Mk5 is obviously newer, so a more modern interior and exterior styling (I prefer the look of the mk5), but is probably more likely to cost in case of repair. Bear in mind, that alot of parts of the mk4 R32 are interchangable with the v6 lump in the 4mo and to an extent mk3/Corrado VR6s too. (Mechanical mostly not electrical though). The mk5 less so, although still quite a bit tbf. Its entirely your choice, and I'd wait to see what you are likely to have cash wise before deciding, as the lpg is gonna cost you around 1k too.
I absolutely agree with you though, 4 pot tfsi will never offer the noise and excitement when you plant your foot, even with a remap! Turbo torque just doesn't compare with unadulterated N/A back breaking torque. I should be getting my accident compo around Feb (finally) so I've been looking at buying a non running Corrado VR dropping an R32 in it.
-
Edition 30 mapped Nuff said!
-
Unless money was no object, I could never simply buy a car just because of the noise it produced!

I agree with this in principle, but if you could buy an 'Edition 30' and remap it and it'll be some 30bhp more powerful than a MKV R32, along with being some 200kg's lighter, resulting in a cheaper to run, faster and more economical car. Why other than the noise, would you entertain an R32?
-
+1 above I have a v6 and note is epic no gti will sound as good but my mate has a stage 1 ed30 at 267bhp and it wipes the floor with my friends mk5 r32 which is also mapped! and as for fuel as MS1 said a lot better on the gti.... It is down to choice i wouldnt change my v6 but if i had 2 i would be going gti route
-
R32's are piss poor in terms of performance, really are unless you bolt a turbo on
noise is nice, but you look a fool when a 4 cylinder whips your ass.... especially when its something like a mk3
if i was to get a mk5 it would have to be a GTI oe GTI ED30... much more scope to do stuff at a decent cost

Not really a valid arguement there Brad, as mk3s never had a Turbo that wasn't "Bolted on"
Why would you buy a 3.2 Audi TT when you could get a 20vT Audi TT??? Ok the 3.2 is slightly more tuned in the TT than in the R32, but its still the same engine.
Its just the age old N/A vs FI arguement at the end of the day.

dont no why everyone loves the turbo so much i went from a 4mo to a cupra r yeah the cupra r is faster if your in the right gear if not its shocking, the v6 is a much better drive smoother dont have to move up and down the box every 2 mins, also the 4wd of a 4mo r32 for everyday use in english weather its worth that alone over the gtis.
miss my 4mo every day since i sold it,but cant aford to sell and buy another.
and would be a mk4 r32 for me over the mk5
end of the day its each to there own everyone has a personal preferance!

You really need to get that map sorted on yours mate coz when mine had the K04 and carbon map it was instant power in every gear
Much better than a lazy v6 dragging aload of weight about
As you say, it's personal preference. I just think theirs better NA cars than what comes in the vw's
-
IMO i would choose a r32 mk4 or 5 any day over a gti.. R32 more exclusive and garenteed to put a smile on your face everytime you drive it :) i personally would go mk4 to save the extra cash for the lpg conversion.

typical 'its not the fastest golf' forum response. Helpful bunch you lot
I prefer the interior of the mk4r to the mk5
Throttle response it brilliant whatever the gear or revs ( cant comment on the dsg) which helps overtaking etc
Personally id go mk5 if budget can stretch to a good example

i have been hoping to mate but other things have come up,just bought a house and getting married in april so the car it going to take a massive back seat for a while.

id go for the mk4 r32. Cracking looking car got a real presence about it that all gti's bar the mk4 anni will never have.
Note of r32 would swing it for me, who gives a fiddlers who is faster than yee! Ive a classic impreza which ive had near 4yrs now, its only around 270bhp so not the fastest of things out there but i didnt buy it to race people i bought it cause i wanted it and rest assured i will never grow sick of the noise of it on full chat. R32 is an itch i also want to scratch and can be had for humble money now

had a go in a r32 a while back and thought it was a typically boring, numb mk4 drive. Very nice place to be and good engine noise but not very dynamic. I can only assume the mk5 offering is better in this department due to the better chassis.

Yeah ive never had the pleasure of driving the mk5 but hopefully its a much revised car, still the interior doesnt do it for me like the mk4 buckets do... on full heat
But for those who like to race everybody (and hasnt put a 1.8t in a mk3 and brags to the world about what it beats) its gutless at higher revs unlike a vr6 is
-
yeah the mk4 interior is nicer than the mk5 on all the model's tbh
I know what you mean about the higher revs, it instantly took off from lower revs but it didn't feel like the power raised through the rev range. a bit wierd tbh, i suppose it does effortless wafting well but not a hot hatch as such
-
Most of the Mk5's are down in price at the moment...and the chassis is a lot better than the Mk4. If presence is a key issue and you want to be noticed, the Mk4 has more of it...its more obvious. Understated and a cruiser...then the Mk5 with the DSG.
I went from Mk5 GTi due to getting a camper...that all fell through, and I had a number of runners in between, but I wanted a GTI again. I decided to wait it out and got a 1 owner ED30 and even in standard form its a step up from the GTI I had in every department. DSG box is sublime and around town or motorway is a pleasure to drive in again. Have a look at DSG fuel consumption arguments on here though. I think they do eat a little more due to the automatic nature of them.
Fuel in an R32 is always gonna be heavy...but if thats an issue dont rule out the ED30 as a compromise. Parts...all should be around without issue and around the same pricing, and whats the insurance difference? Bet not much in it.

I would have the mk4 r32 over mk5 i just prefer the looks
-
i am having this problem too :(
