i dont have loads to spend on either any recommendations and ones to avoid thanks in advance
-
from what ive been reading on this club the smic work to a limit but cannot beat FMIC for cooling effect. if you look in faq section there some good right ups on there.
-
All depends on what is needed. Can get uprated side mount for £100 also think there is one in classifieds but as said what power u gonna be running??
-
Decent smic good said many of time i use tyrolsport which i got off my nephew in florida and he uses one with gt28 turbo no heat soak in that heat. Ran mine ko3s APR stage2 my intake temps no different from my mate with fmic when checking with vagcom. Need wheel arch venting tho.
-
im only looking to improve the breathing nothing fancy get a stage 1 so nothing major
-
JuSt get a uprated side mount with tt arch vent mod (DIY for less than a tenner) that should be sufficient and cost the least, then a fmic eBay one for about £160 will be fine too!!!
If U do side mount uprate hoses (forge 5 piece boost hose kit) to get the best flow, and maybe pcr pipe too!!!
-
Go for a FMIC as well as better cooling you'll get better flow. Have you seen the how to guild?
-
I cant see how any 'uprated' SMIC will be any better than the shoddy stock smic do to the limiting air flow you get to it through the tinny gril. FMIC all the way all you have to do is look at the front of the car to see where youl be getting the best flow
-
Only effectiveness a SMIC has is when you take it to weigh it in as scrap alloy and get about £2.50 for it. They are useless. They dont work and never will. OEM would be better than a 'uprated' smic.
get a FMIC and decent pipework.
-
I been looking on ebay they seem cheap i plan on keeping the car for a while am i better off spending that extra money and going for forge?
-
Forge FMIC or SMIC? a SMIC really isnt worth it.
-
forge front gonna see if a get a front mount the bloke will chuck in the d.v for free
-
:D
THS is a cheaper option too ;)
-
ths? worth a look on ebay ya reckon
-
http://thsperformance.co.uk/intercooler-flip.php
Better than forge too as better piping.
-
i have a THS front mount :)
-
I had a THS front mount.
-
that looks like a good kit are they easy fit?
-
Really easy mate!
-
Thx for ya help think that might be my after xmas present lol
-
Dot spend loads f money on a forge or ths cooler.
By a bigger type b "wellycooler" with all the pipe work which works better for less.
Just look in the maintenance section for prawnys guide!
-
The toylsport smic gets amazing reviews in states though even claiming same temp drops as fmic.... but in my head with size of a fmic it surly cant be beaten.
The toyosports fmic is 2.5" piping for less than £200 direct from them (on ebay over £425!)
THS is about £400
I just dont get which design of fmic better as in inlet outlet on oneside like ths or inlet then outlet like the toyosports etc
-
The smic arnt great, r tech proved this on the dyno!
And the fmic's with inlet and outlet on opposite sides are the best as the have better flow characteristics.
-
Has anyone run a wellycooler fmic with k03?
I would downsize the cooler itself. But am just concerned the 2.5" pipes will to too much voulume for the k03 to fill. Giving silly lag.
-
Not o sure about the k03 but IMO if your willing I spend a few hundred pound on gettin a fmic even tho you o ly have a k03 you might as well spend another few hundred on buyin a k03s as the gain will be much better!
-
A decent k03s, actuator and correction to map soon adds up!
-
I will let you know in a week or 2 when mines back on the road
Will be running 2.5" pipe work on k03 for a bit
-
so if the better intercooler is the side exits ones one each side why are the most expensive ones forge and ths both on one side. it also would seem the toyosports etc would be worse as they would have more piping wouldnt the
-
I think part of it was that it is easier for DIY fitting because it can utilises part of the stock pipework, eurojet racing is another premium front mount intercooler but they utilise a single pass design as opposed to twin. Just down to the design requirements.
-
but are we talking big differences here the quality of say a THS is good and is a complete kit and looks tidy etc compared to the ebay cheap kits and even forges single pass with alot of piping imo is there really going to be big difference in what your efficancy would be. ive looked at the ebay toyosports and seems to good to be true £200 for a complete kit direct fit intercooler........
-
There are many contributing factors to the efficiency of a charge cooler, piping as you suggest is one of them. The efficiency of a charge cooler in short does make a difference, yes. Whether the difference can be discerned on the road is another matter.
From what I have seen, an 'ebay front mount intercooler' is not a direct bolt on and requires some bodging - not talking about the bumper. The piping is horrid and besides the efficiency of the piping route is concerned, the fitment is also another issue.
In short it just depends on your requirements, the THS kit strikes me as being the most friendly to fit on the drive. Larger single pass by premium manufacturers may provide a more efficient design but proves more problematic to fit and requires the bumper to be trimmed more. Whilst 'ebay front mount intercooler' will require further fiddling around. This is partly reflected in the pricing of the kits.

thanks for the good info there
Ill stick with original plan i think and get THS

By lookin at te eBay "complete" kits
Your looking at the WRong thing as the pipe work is terrible
You want the toyosport type b core for £80 and ten the pipe work bought desperately following prawns guide.
The reason ths and forge do their fmi that way is because as said it utilises standard pipe work etc
-
Does the toyosports type B come with 3" in and outlets?

oh i see. maybe look into that too then thanks again

Yep 3"
-
argh.
Factory bought kits are only twin pass to keey the engine bays looking stock and utilise the OEM charge pipe, this makes N75 and DV fitting much more simple.
The forge kit is OK, but hugely expensive, and still retains the stock charge pipe and pancake.
The THS kit is better, and replaces the pancake pipe, but it's still a twin pass, and still uses the stock charge pipe, so no good for anything with a turbo swap above a ko3S, or a high power ko3 hybrid that needs 2.5'' pipework.
The toyosports type B cooler is what you make of it - potentially fantastic, potentially fail-tastic. Depends on your level of skill to be honest!
The complete toyosports kit with custom pipework can be done for less than £250, and will absolutely 100% out perform the Forge or THS coolers, but naturally, it is more work to fit it, and you need to work out what bends / pipes you need then make it all fit, it's not an off the shelf kit at all, it's alist of parts bought from different places.
-
Didn't know you we're a pirate prawny
Good info there, glad I went your way with the 'welly'
-
THS worked fine for me, but going bigger/more efficient on this build.
Ideal is someone wants something for a tuned k03s (cant comment on k04, but nick ran his at 300bhp)
-
Is it possible to fit the Toyosports intercooler behind a standard bumper ?
I know a fair amount of chopping is required but will it end up really obvious ? Grills still fit ?
Any pictures ? ;)
