Hello there,
I'm about to change my oil and filter and was wondering if anyone could recommend me a good oil?
I've got a 1991 8v gti, should i use a semi synthetic or normal etc?
What rating would it be if I was to use a semi synthetic?
Any suggestions welcome!
Thanks guys, the.little.fox x

Everyone on here recomends a genuine filter from vag as they have a 1 way valve in them or something like that. Combined with vw's syntha silver oil. I dont know the exact details as ive not used them yet but im going to at the end of the month so would be gratefull if anyone could give the exact details of what to ask for at the vw parts desk. Cheers

That's the general consensus in here guys VW synta silver and OE oil filter from VW parts desk will have it in stock and should know what your after I'd advise a flush of your engine too.
-
Do vw do the flush stuff too?
-
i wouldnt flush a 16v ever. unless u know thats its been flushed every oil change since it was new!!
flushes just dislodges lumps of shÃÂÂt which then get stuck in oil ways etc
-
Oops!
I've just recently changed oil/filter on my valver. I flushed it first with comma engine flush.
Must admint though it isa lot quieter and smoother after the flush, so just hope I haven't dislodged anything.
VW Filter and Synta Silver oil have a made a massive difference to my noisy tappets - except for 10 secs or so on startup from cold they don't rattle now!!
-
Any idea how much this is going to cost me if I buy this VW specialist stuff?
Gambit - I want your wheels! There was a nice set in red on ebay the other day, went for £750! they were a bit silly in red mind.

Give them your engine code and they should give you the right one as there are different ones depending on engine codes

Know you de man but don't agree there Gambit an engine flush is the best thing I did for mine mate quiet as a mouse and the amount of sh!te that came out wouldn't have done the engine any good IMO I think engine flushes are a good way of clearing your oil ways out. Bit like a colonic irrigation!

As you don't end up in the sh!t

If you go into any VW dealer there will be a shelf with the Quantum Synta Silver and Quantum Synta Gold on it. I'd recommend, as already done so, to get a genuine oil filter and use Quantum Synta Silver (I think the Gold is more for the mk4  :undecided: ). As a price guide I think the 5ltr Synta Silver is about £18 and the oil filter will be about £4.50(ish) from VAG. You can also get the genuine parts from your local German, Swedish & French and that will save yourself a few quid.

so what's wrong with good old castrol etc etc etc ????
surely it can't all be poo .....
-
VW oil filter, flush evey change, and Magnatec oil for me - guess everyone's got their own opinions on oil, but Magnatec silenced my tappets immediately, so that's what I use on my 8v with 113k. I do a change every 6K - seems to keep it running sweet!

Don't think anyone is saying that it is or there's anything wrong with other oils. I personally like to use the VAG stuff and would always recommend it, but each to their own and if castrol etc doesn't cause any problems then that's cool.
-
EXTRA VIRGIN does it for me!
-
Gambit is 100% correct about caution when flushing an engine. You can really easily block oil galleries etc causing major trouble. Should only flush if your quite sure that oil has been changed flushed regularly as per schedule.
-
Oh and don't forget to get some copper washers for the sump plug from the dealer to replace the one on there if it has one.
Each to their own but i always flush my sh!t!
-
Trouble is, sometimes it won't flush
-
But surely it would only be a matter of time before it bunged the oilways up anyway? better to clear it out before it builds up? how does it block them anyway interested now as I have always flushed my engine every other oil change and never had any problems? would the filter not catch any crud and stop it circulating?
I have also heard the castrol high mileage oil is very good for our aged cars and magnatec breaks down very quickly?
-
I always flush mine and as for oil I just bung anything in thats lying about in the garage and I get a oil filter from Halfords.I don't think its that big a deal as long as you don't let it run out of oil or leave the same oil filter on for 5 years.
-
An engine thats had oil changes at correct intervals or even better more regularly, should not suffer from the gunge that will block it up after a flush. Without flushing you dont dislodge it all and it will only get worse with more neglect. But when flushing you are actually trying to dislodge these build ups and they tend to end up where you dont want them, oil galleries etc. Regular oil changes on an engine that has previously been allowed to run over schedule is better than flushing as the new oil isnt intended to try and clean up gunk from missed oil changes.
-
So it's more a don't do it if you don't know how well and often the old oil changes were. OK well I have fsh so should be ok thanks for the explanation.
-
Just a quick question (sorry to hi-jack abit) but wot oil would you recommend for my humble 1.6 Driver?? The VW stuff or does anything go!!?? lol
Cheers

On most of our customer VW's we supply and use Synta Silver & Gold, on the older cars you have an option for using both and also very dependant on the customers choice.
Some of our customer prefer fully synthetic.
Our demo car runs Royal Purple 20/50w full race synthetic oil for the summer and then 15/40w for the colder months, both oils have reduced the oil drive temperature by up to 10c in some cases, although the thicker oil will run hotter then the lighter oil.
We provide engine flushes on most older cars now, and to date we have had no problems, we also recommend to all our customer that the oil is changes every 5k miles, a better policy or insurance then the VW service interval recommendations.
Also to reply to the 1.6 Driver question, Synta Silver with a genuine filter should be fine for the EZ coded engine, hope this helps.
