Title: Golf R 4 wheel drive failure?
Post by: jdjd on 04 December 2012, 21:29
I'm sure I'm getting no power to my rear wheels on my R, happened halfway into a spirited drive yesterday, front wheels are spinning like crazy all the way into 4th when pedal is pushed down, and torque steering.

Is this likely to be a super expensive to fix?
I have no warning lights, no bangs rattles noises or impact when it happened, Car is out of warranty now :s

Posted off my phone thanks!

Oh dear I am sorry to hear that especially now out of warranty. Is there anything on the R forum about this? Haldex issue may be?

Thats not good

Just a shot in the dark but have you checked the fuse ?
ive seen Rs take the haldex fuse out when on the rollers to stop the rear wheels driving, hope its something as simple as this for you bud ?

Earlier Freelanders, that used the same Haldex system were prone to failure. You can hear it whining/grinding when at low speed on a lot of lock, just holding speed. Try it in a car park and see if you can hear anything. If you can't it may well be electrical.

No noises or anything,
Has anybody here got a golf R? In my booklet it doesn't even provide me with a list to show what fuse effects what, Am I looking into the engine bay fuse box or dashboard one?

Where's hurdy when you need him

Known issue. See YouTube and the r forum most noticed it last year in the ice and make.
Think I even posted about it on the r forum.

You found out anything JD ?

I suggested fuse and haldex to you by text.

Fuse is fuse station 31 and if it is your Haldex box, I have a spare one.

If there's a fault I'd expect an ESP fault, or at least some sort of warning on the dash.

Have you tried a hard launch in first gear?

If its the common fault (as I talked about on the r forum) Iirc it only shows a fault in the haldex box.

Turns out I got fobbed off at the dealership last time, my 10 plate is still covered under warranty after a call to  vw uk hq
The haldex pump is showing a fault and they are going to replace in the morning.

Does anybody know the price of one of these pumps? Be interesting to know what that would of cost me

Faulty Haldex Pumps seems to be a common problem with the R

There's been a few similar stories on the R forum :-

Good to hear you're still under warranty
