Title: Three lights of death?
Post by: clipperjay on 03 December 2012, 20:37
Anyone fixed an Xbox 360 before?
Three lights of death look like thermal issues?  :undecided:
I've taken the kids one apart and cleaned up the thermal paste, but the X brackets are just poo!
So I getting some bolts and nylon washers to try and secure it abit more.
Any suggestions on how to fix the old gal?
I bought this back in 2005 so had 8 years of play before this has happened, proberly the oldest Xbox 360 so wanna fix it!
The X brackets look like I need to dremel off the secure tabs so I can re-use the X bracket with the bolts for tighter hold on the coolers?

Cheers in advance for info.

You can get some descent New x clamp kits with improved clamp, bolts, washers etc... of ebay. Use some descent thermal paste too like arctic silver, being a pc guy I imagine you got some.

I found it does the trick and extended my xboxs life and put it back to life. I think from what I've read the Xbox pcbs warp and the solder fractures over time which is why the towel trick works to a degree causing the solder to reflow and settle.

unleaded solder used in these. Over time it goes brittle and cracks. Get a new one

Yeah bought three washers and used some old bolts and screws then cleaned GPU CPU stuck some artic silver. Had to drill 7mm holes to make room for the bolt heads otherwise the PCB would not sit flush.
So far tried pulling fan out to overheat it to reflow 20mins
Tried hair drier 5mins
Tried sticking a low flame over the heat sink to reflow 1min
Still got three lights!
TBF need one of those heat plates and heat lights apprently need it about 440F odd to reflow?
Gave it my best shot but its over 7 years old and first time its failed.

On another note Alex the boiler PCB gave me sh!t as you know, and it wasn't the pump, as it locks out when its off and the water pump still runs on. I took the PCB off and cleaned it with alcohol wipes and dust spray.
Works fine now its only locked out once since rebuild, but fear its the same thing bad soldiering joints and overheating.
The new PCB requires new loom and fan which I couldn't be arsed

yeah the pcb in that boiler are famous for the lockout fault. If you replace the pcb and wiring loom, the new one has been updated and is more reliable.

Have you tried using a heat gun to reflow..if its the same as the ps3 you will some no clean flux also..

Hair drier or a naked flame wont generate enough heat to reball..

Well wife did suggest buying a PS3 for the boy for his birthday?
Does PS3 have Batman games thought it would cause an issues with the games he like to play with?
Guess I can trade his Xbox games for PS3 ones.
TBF his attitude is better after it died LOL!
Looked for a reflow heat kit and its not cheap indeedee!

Did this on my first xbox and it worked for about 8 months after but it happened again. You need a paint stripper heat gun to reheat the solder. TBH get a new one, they are about £150 and don't have the same issues anymore. I have a ps3 as well and tbh it never gets played that includes the kids the xbox it just a better gaming consol.

His birthday is in April and we are considering the PS3 quite like the fact you can play blue ray discs and going online is free?
But just missed boxing day deal at Morrison for £99 on the Xbox 360  :lipsrsealed:

Anyways I'm not too hot in buying stuff just because its cheap and being Christmas time they get what they need and should be happy with what they get TBH.

Haaa just remembered my brother in law has one, four rings of death I said I'll take it apart with mine and see if I can make one good one LOOL!

Recently tried to fix my mates Xbox with no success.  Took it all apart and removed the manky thermal paste, which was EVERYWHERE!  Looks like someone tried to fix it in the past but decided to use  gallon of the stuff!  It's all over the resistors and capacitors.  Did the best I could then put a tiny bit of new paste on.  Tried it out, no red lights.  Put the consol back together gain and plugged in properly, red lights

Damm £99 was a good price. Think i paid more than that for my second hand xbox. Was a few years ago. Not got the new shape one but i have the one one with the jasper chip set that runs the 150 watt block .
Requires less power and does not get so hot. Been no bother since 2008.

I use Acidtone best stuff to remove thermal paste quickly, but some of the white stuff is just rubbish plus when you take it off you can see peaks of paste that show of the mobo is warped by the way the paste looks after you take it off.

My brother in law said his xbox 360 was dun in (four rings of death) so I took it back with me. I think he was running it through a CRC TV and they don't like it, but the first boot up the colour was a tad green on our LCD.
Cleaned it up and it works fine for now, so drama over he now has a xbox 360 and my moths can stay in my wallet! :nerd:

Jasper chipset on mine has been fine since 2008, regularly in use as well.

Only time I've ever had issues was when hdd wasnt connected properly, or when the psu stayed on a red light once.

Sometimes the disc drive jams and won't open, but thats an easy fix with a new drive belt from ebay (repair guides on youtube), done one before in about 5 mins

Yea my tray sticks bad. I have to leave a disc in there or it won't open at all. Might have to do a search for that fix.

Re-grease the tracks never turn on an xbox without the drive connected it sends a kill signal to the xbox live and it wont ever be able to go on it again!

Dry tracks arent the issue, a slack drive band is. Its like a small rubber band, and as it gets worn it becomes loose and fails to provide the drawer with enough umph to open.

Greasing the tracks wont hurt but watch the laser

How to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jkdv9A5fZR8 (hardest part is opening the Xbox itself)

Drive bands on ebay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-X-XBOX-360-DVD-DRIVE-BELT-BAND-BENQ-LITE-ON-HITACHI-SAMSUNG-/110997788699?pt=UK_VG_Replacement_Parts_Tools&hash=item19d7fbd81b
