Title: I'm back with a new problem, 8v gti
Post by: GOLF-MK3-GTI on 02 December 2012, 23:22
Right, a few months ago I had problems with my 8v refusing to start once warm,

My next move was to replace the crank sensor, but I didn't bother, due to the problem going away, as it's been a good few months and I've done about 2000 miles sicne and not let me down at all.

Today, guess what?, took it out in morning, drove in it all day, and in the evening it refused to start.

So I left it for 30 mins, After 30 mins, I started it and it started. But the rev needle was stuck between 1000 and 2000 rpm. So I got pissed off and throttled it like a lunatic. Anyway that sorted the revs problems and it started ideling like it should.

So I took it on motorway and done a trip to manchester, roughly about 100 miles there an back.

Once I got near to home, I had it ideling outside my mates house and all of a sudden it died, tried starting it, but refused. So again I left it, came back half an hour later, it started, drove up the road and the car lost power, and the revs went complete mental, I mean bouncing all over the place.

So I towed the damn thing home, any help to what it could be?

Cheers peeps.

Does the oil light flash when it dies or when you are trying to start it and it refuses to do so?

it only flashes when the car looses power and the revs go haywire lol, apart from that it never flashes

In that case it sounds to me like the crank angle sensor.

Do you have a machine that can read fault codes?

Just a quick update,

I turned the key today and it started, left it ideling for 10 mins, temp went half way, so I took it for a spin, drove about in it, and nothing went wrong.

It's proper deceiving, god knows when it will cock up nextime,

so what do you guys recommend?, should I change the crank sensor? And take things on from there...

Got mine from TPS, fitting requires a couple of jacks and a few axle stands unless you have access to a ramp.
