Title: EGR valve
Post by: Anthony on 30 November 2012, 19:00
Sorry if this is a daft question and it doesnt make sense ! I'm after a bit of info on my egr valve . as you all know there are 2 vac lines to the egr,one slightly thicker pipe to the top of the egr valve itself which i get good suction off if i remove at idle, and the other slightly thinner one which goes to adjust the flap inside the egr ( sorry for the crap explanation!) i dont seem to get any vacum off this one and if i rev engine it doesnt seem to adjust, which i would expect to see the arm adjust the flap at different engine speeds? is this normal ?

The flap only moves when the engine is cold I think. It will be sensory driven. The EGR valve is there to help the engine warm up when cold, by recycling warm exhaust gases.

Don't let it bother you...You don't even need a EGR valve.

I would rather it work as it should tho , surley if its not adjusting its not working corectly. Ive read it can cause rough ide , and when i'm going uphill i get a bit of hesitation at around 2k it sort of coughs a little and affects fuel consupmtion , i would say its the egr causeing these probs on my motor. its had a solonoid for the egr so i know thats ok . but the adjustment is controlled by the centre one of the 3, so maybe thats the fault. I took the pipe off and i could blow and suck the pipe with no resistence where as i cant the other

One pipe operates the EGR other operates the ASV, I would think a fault would be logged if EGR was not working though, the vac line for ASV I presume only receives vacuum when you shot engine off and flap closes to shut off air to engine, it would also kick in rare case of run-away engine, once there is not vacuum the flap returns to open, I guess thats how it works?

Have you taken the EGR boost pipe off to have a look at the internals of the EGR unit? ie carbon buildup.. could do with cleaning out?

cheers mate that makes sense now, that will explain why before i cleaned the egr and inlet why the engine made a knocking noise when turned off before cleaning but was much quieter after cleaning , it must'nt have been closing proprerly. sounds like egr is good though. I wrongly thought the egr used that flap to control air flow in a simular way and old carb does.

No worries, yea the ASV flap is closed for a couple of seconds when you turn engine off so you're bang on the money there nice work cleaning it out, reminds me I need to do mine, actually might have time tomorrow..

Think I'm going to delete the EGR on mine but keep ASV, I'll cut out EGR valve, fill with jbweld and smooth it like this guy has done...

You don't need the anti shudder valve, just dip the clutch when you switch the car off :afro:
