Title: Just bought a GTI - is it chipped?
Post by: gogzyb85 on 29 November 2012, 00:26
This may seem like a silly question, but here goes!

I just bought a 56 plate Golf GTI with DSG and it is SERIOUSLY quick - I'm not sure if it has been remapped, if I floor it in 3rd or 4th gear I can spin the wheels and the pace it accelerates from 30 to 100 is incredible!

I had a 54 plate GT TDI 140 that was remapped and it could not even touch the GTI...

Is the car this quick as standard?

The standard Gti's aren't much kop speed wise, I've driven MK5's and MK6's and as standard I would never describe them as you have. Having said that even a Gti would feel quick against a 140TDI, regardless of whether or not it had been remapped.

You ought to get your car plugged in on diagnostics to tell if it has been remapped, or get it on a dyno and get a readout. If I were you I would get another remap regardless, because if the previous owner has sold it to you without giving you any information on the tuner, then he can't have been that proud of it. Or he may have just been trying to sell it as standard to get a better price for it. Either way I would still want a reputable remap on my car to ensure it's longevity.

My dsg gti is much the same, pisses all over my 250hp smelly nissan. It takes no time at all to reach 120 which is ace :D

As far as I know it's standard, it's going to vw for timing chain shortly do ill get the lads to take a peek in for me :)

I've just bought a Superchips Bluefin, so I'll find out if it has been remapped and if it hasn't, I guess it will become a very seriously quick car!

Will post an update in the next few days.

It's the DSG that makes it feel fast.
You will get used to it in a week or two.
Then it will just feel normal.

Which is why a car with really good steering will always win out in the long term, putting a smile on your face when the novelty of going fast has worn off.
(The Golf GTI does not have really good steering btw, sorry)

I'd beg to differ, even on the twisties of Devon, in a mostly damp or wet climate, my Gti handles very well even being marginally over powered for the amount of traction mods I've made to it.

At speed the steering is light and responsive and only becomes a little tacky when traction is an issue. Admittedly at low speed it is heavy, which makes for rather arduous town driving, but who drives their Gti at low speed, for long times?

You'll enjoy the Gti for a long time to come I'm sure of that gogzyb85. Especially with another 40bhp buried under the bonnet in the form of a decent remap. If you can contain modding bug, then it's a brilliant and yet rather inexpensive mod to bring what is an averagely powered hatchback, up to a very well powered and very fun hatchback.
I would say in addition to the remap though it is likely that your oem diveter valve will fail at some point. They have a pathetically woeful, thin rubber diaphragm that contracts and expands under load and they always split with increased boost pressures. You can purchase an uprated 'Forge DV' for about £175, which will eliminate any potential mishaps with boost leaks.

Let us know what you think of the 'Bluefin' and try to get your car on a dyno so you can see what gains have been made.

6 months into mk5 ownership and mine hasn't got boring at all.

Ok my Nissan will far out handle the golf on track (and with 2k+ invested in suspension components I'd expect it to) but the golf is fast, fun, economical and comfy. The last two the Nissan isn't!
I love the mk5, it's the best golf I've had yet and the nicest as a car.

But mr egbutt nosher seems to have a long standing vendetta against the steering arrangement, perhaps he'd like a golf with a ships wheel with some chains running to a rudder?

I've noticed a recurring theme with Egbutt's views on the Gti too! I'm wondering why he is even on the forum, as it is named golfgtiforum.co.uk and yet he seems to hate the damn things....

He's been like that since I joined though I believe he's changed his name since.

To be fair I don't have many good things to say about the Mk6 golf and I'm still here

I think the mk5 GTI with DSG is a great blend of shopping car / commuter / fun in an affordable package.

On paper the MK6 is surely the engine to go for in comparison to TFSI...but I agree performance/price ratio is better with MK5 GTI.

The MK6 prices are falling though.

Hi all,

I contacted the previous owner of the Golf GTI, who advised that he had it remapped by Revo to 241bhp and 358Nm of torque... that explains why it goes like sh*t off a shovel!

I timed my 0-60 at 6.1 secs on the first run and 6.0 secs on the second and at Craig airfield, I accelerated from 0-100mph in 10.4 secs - these figures seem astonishing for a remapped bog standard GTI!

I'll put some pics up, because I also found out the Recaro bucket seats that are in my car are very rare and were a £1,500 optional extra when the car was new.

So on the basis of the above, I would strongly recommend Revo as an outfit to remap your car!

That explains a lot. Although I'm very surprised at the 0-100mph time, my Gti is nearing 300bhp and only managed 0-100mph in 10.66 seconds.

The MK6 is hampered by crap engine management which makes it awkward to tune tidy

Gogzyb, that makes your car 60-100mph in 4.4seconds!!!

That is unbelievably fast, especially considering that my 379bhp/500nm 4WD, DSG car only does 0-60mph in 3.9 seconds and yet only manages the 60-100mph in 4.9 seconds!! :undecided:

Your power to weight is around 172bhp/ton given a weight of 1,400kg

Mine power to weight is 250bhp/ton given its known weight of 1,520kg

You beat me to it. My 60-100mph is 5.36 seconds. So I'm somewhat dubious of these times, but either way sounds like an epic car.
