Hi All
So - the starter motor has started to make a screetching sound when I turn the key. Can anyone advise a new one to buy please?
-
yeah vw can advise a new one.
equally take it apart, grease it up, stick it back on, will go for another year or so with out screetching, only takes around a hour or 2. have a look in the maintenence section theres a thread on it.

why do these things only last 12months? incidently the life of the warranty

they last longer than 12 months. mines 12 year old.
i guess its just that its damaging the motor. So once its started its never going to last as long so no matter how much greese you pack in there its still a damaged motor.
-
well i replaced my starter motor last year and its already making that god-aweful noise, actually woke up the neighbours when i started it, took i to my mechanic and he did say the last garage didnt replace with a bosch part??? could this be the problem or are you saying that once it starts squeeling i'll never stop even with a new motor?

Thank you for your replies.
Is Bosch the way to go? Also, if I leave it, is it doing any damage to the car?
-
no...just your dignity, so spare yourself the embarrasment lol ive seen bosch motor for abou 80 on line somewhere just do a google search

Mines been screeching for over 12months, not got better or worse.
It wont damage any other part of your car but when it goes completely you will probably
find yourself as far away from home as possible
Thats usually how it works.

Mine has been doing it for 2 and a half years, I did clean it and re-lube but it started again
after about 6mths. Going to leave it as it is now until it stops working
-
it only build up of dust and quick clean and grease it iwill stop it
-
the previous garage fitted mine with sub standard parts so it started up again, he also said that its only had one change in the life of the vehicle and that the latest bosch ones will last possibly till the engine drops out
-
longer you leave it the more load thats goin on the solenoid, mines lasted over 2 years with the screech and for the first time ever this morn it stuttered to start, whip it off and grease it up well, i used copper slip which i can safely say is no good, use white grease and it should work much better

If you like you can buy my spare one
Bought off the breakers, in good nick n only 20...gotta plug it when opportunity arises!

I have had quite a few 20vt come to me with this problem. I took it apart, greased it up, put it all back together and it fixes the problem for about 3-7 months. It seems to be resigned to those who are still running the standard DMF and clutch setup, perhaps the high mileage on the standard clutch combined with the extra strain of a remap are producing more clutch dust. The same thing happens even with those who purchase refurbished starter motors for me to fit.
While those who have changed to a SMF setup and new clutch have not had the problem re-occur.
-
Id recommend using genuine OEM starters then it will last another 10years. Just pay the TPS/VW price tag not the cheap chinese sh!t.
Job done

right i'll get my SMF sorted out now as well, it'll save the ball ache in the future
