Title: Problem with power loss once engine is warm. Golf mk2 1.8 16v
Post by: Gti kendall on 26 November 2012, 20:40
Hi all!

Can anyone shed some light and help me with a problem I've got with vw golf gti 1.8 16v.?

The problem is that once the car has been driven 2 - 3 miles and the engine has warmed up slightly the car begins to lose all its power to the point where it starts to miss/stall.  The car starts up straight away when cold and idles perfect.
Once the car gets to the stage of stalling, if you leave it 5mins it will start up with abit of hesitation but after a few mins of running it will start to play up again by losing power and eventually stalling again.

I have changed the alternator, battery, coil pack, distributor, changed earth strap from engine to body, checked for any vacuum leaks, and the starter motor.

Any help would be much appreciated

Thanks

does the rev counter start bouncing around erratically when it gets to miss/stall? your symptoms sound a lot like the hall sender breaking down. did you replace the distributor completely or just the distributor cap & rotor arm?

The rev counter is fine and the complete distributor has been replaced.

Welcome to the Mk2 section

Have you changed the fuel filter? could be fuel starvation!
