Likewise, that's a really nice motor tbf and it's the completely flushed boots on mk2's ans 3's that look utter sh!te.

Agreed, never looks right on a mk2 or mk3.

Theirs a lot of misinformed sh!te on this thread...
The blue Mk3 tailgate is nothing more than "Recessed" or "Tunneled" and has been executed with very little imagination... the misinformed would say its been "Frenched" its not.
"Frenching" is to recess a headlight or taillight in a shape that resembles the collar of a shirt... ie, the lamp would be where your neck would be!
A tailgate that has had No plate recess removed, and perhaps swage lines ironed out, has simply been "Smoothed" or "Decked" this is definitely not "Frenching"
Thom
-
I'm afraid many people refer to smooth tailgates as frenched
i never used to personally and do regard it as smoothed, but was a big thing about it in the magazines in the 90's, (think it was max flower) the french claimed they were the first to do it hence why some call it that
either way, it looks bab

Speaking of mis-informed, it's 'there's' and I must be among the mis-informed, as this, to me would be 'frenched'

Maybe you could provide a 'true' example, Thom?
Relocating the plate to the bumper should be referred to as Golf4ed, surely?
-
Golf 4 was not available when the mod was taking place.. Was mid 90's and huge in France
-
I was joking, but never mind, eh? You're talking about smoothing a bootlid, numbnuts.
If you search for 'frenched' on E38 you'll find lots of numberplates on bootlids without the trim and pushbutton above them. Startlingly E38 agrees with me, but you're great at arguing black is white, so get going - I can hardly wait for your terrible explanation (http://www.northloop.co.uk/forum/images/smilies/loser.gif).
Still interested to see an example of Thom's take on it.
-
Tbh and as much a shock it may be I agree with you
I just know some folks regarded smoothing of tailgates to the term "frenched"
I have no idea what he was on a lot tho and comparisons to collars on shirts
Will await his reply

Haha no way

What Thom is saying, is basically this:
Frenching is the act of recessing or moulding a headlight, taillight, antenna or number plate into a car body to give a smoother look to the vehicle. The name originates from the end result looking like a French cuff of a shirt sleeve, which has a ridge at the end. Also known as tunnelling, it is a common modification used on leadsleds and customs since the 1930s
It's used more to describe headlights/tail lights than a number plate recess. Though in both cases, it would still be the correct way to address the modification.

I'm not taking it from you - I want to hear it from Thom!

Wherry is quite correct but a number plate can be frenched.
But the example DH has shown only has the top smoothed over. To "french" something you have to recess something further than standard. On a Mk3 that is impossible!
Believe me I have tried!
-
You need a sledgehammer, Len - that will definitely recess most things on a Golf3 further than they were to start with.

well recessing a number plate into bumper of a mk3 golf is further than standard, or so some people may think
-
Well im glad we gettin this so called "frenchin" sorted out haha i must admit i like the slight smothin above the no plate but as for movin it no chance n i def aint doin nothin like that to lights haha
-
I thought this was Frenching?

As good as the workmanship ship is on LowlifeDubber's car is, the boot is one of the very few things that aren't to my taste.

Agreed. It just looks a bit weird. Like its got rabbit teeth or something.
From the front his car looks great though!
-
I agree as good as the workmanship is this is not to my taste!
-
maybe with a dub logo and/or a boot lock
-
It looks the front of another car, attached to the back. Not my cup of tea, but each to their own
