Title: electrical lighting issues! fogs flashing with indicators and brake lights
Post by: wrobstar21 on 25 November 2012, 13:03
Hi all, not been on for a while as my gti 16v has been running like a dream. Recently though when indicating and braking the fog light indicator on the dash flashes too or stays on if I'm braking. I've had a look and looking at the back of the car the rear lights dim on & off when indicating & fogs come on when braking.
Any ideas of where to start looking etc or anyone had similar?
Rob

Sounds like water has got into the rear light clusters. Have a look at the metal tracks which give the lights power. My fog light was flashing when braking for this reason. You should see some signs of corrosion.

You can try cleaning them up. Might be worth checking the membranes for the rear lights as thats where the water will be getting in.

Nice one, will have a look now. My smoked rear clusters do look as if moisture is getting in! The smoke is coming off!. Much appreciated!!

Turns out the long plug on the loom that goes into the left hand cluster has melted the cluster at one of the plug pins. I wedged it a bit to keep all the connections. Shorted in the past it looks like! I'm just gonna get new clusters/lights
