Title: Going to see a VW Golf MK4 1.9 TDI, What to look for??
Post by: GOLF-MK3-GTI on 25 November 2012, 11:59
Hi

I'm going to see 2 golf's 1.9 tdi, is there any common faults to look out for?

They both have got full service history and have done 150,000?

also 2001 onwards is the road tax cheaper?

Thanks

Listen to the rocker cover and see if it sounds tappety if it does then the cams maybe on the way out.

Listen out for unusal turbo whistle, if so turbo could be on the way out.

Listen out for Knocks coming from the gearbox - this could be the flywheel on its way out.

Check for boost leaks.

The above are pretty much all of the expensive things that can, and at some point will, go wrong with the TDIs. Other than those the usual checks.
