Well after months of reserch and a few of you receiving PM's from me asking advise, today is the day I will try and fit my Coilovers, bare in mind this is the 1st time I have tryed anything like this so below is my checklist.
- A few pizzias as i expect this will take awhile.
- Spring compressors.
- Brand new set of JOM coilovers.
- New OEM rear bump stops.
- New OEM front mounts & barings.
- A flat garage (down my cusions)
- A kettle for the garage with plenty of decaf coffee.
- Loads of tools & propper jack (again my cusions).
- Copper greese.
- A tape measure to measure Arch to floor.
Anything else I have missed?
-
caffienated coffee for when everything goes T!ts up lol
and consider my PM, too low and you'll definatly have to start thinking of your ARBS and spacers, and howcome you didnt take a look at the poly top mounts? they add another few mil to the lowering as well? :undecided:

and that

We got all the tools we will need, James, Im only going 40mm and after speaking to Wazz, he suggested I lower first and see if I need to think about the ARB then.

cool beans, let us know how you get along, currently saving for the TT and Whitline ARB's and they arent cheap
-
If your replacing the top mounts and bearings you dont need spring compressors btw
Rears are easy takes about 30mins to complete both sides.
-Front are pretty easy too.
-Wheels off, spray loads of lube on the nut and bolt holding strut to hub and the strut itself where it enters the hub.
-Undo bolt, Get a BIG lump hammer smash that strut out of the hub (big effort sometimes)
-Undo the top nut in the engine bay and the complete strut will come out in one piece.
-Replace the old strut with new, bare in mind you can build your new units with a new bearing then mount.
Shouldnt take more than 2-3 hours on a drive 1st time.
Good luck
-
koolio, I think the bigest headace will be trying to get them all to 40mm
-
Parr thats the easy part mate.
The hardest part for me is gettting the old struts loose out of the hubs lmoa
-
Whats the best way to adjust then? Cuz i thought the whole take wheel off, adjust, put wheel back on was the only way?
-
I opened my front hubs up with a large chisel and the struts pretty much fell out. You don't need to open it alot
-
Well that stopped before it even started. Lol my cusion thought he had all the tools we needed but all apart from the tool to undo the strut bolt grrrr gunna have order the tool from somewhere, went to toolstation and halfolds none of them had a tool i needed :( put on hold for another day
-
Easy tip when you wanna drop the hub of te strut is get a 1/4 inch wratchet with an extension hit the end into the gap at the back of the strut the. Turn the wratchet to open it

You could use a stepped spanner and an allan key....
Something like that.
-
Thats what we didnt have. Went to halfords and they didnt have any.....
-
Ebay buddy. Iv got one somewhere but iv literally just moved houses so everything is everywhere atm
-
Np, we gunna have another pop on tuesday if i can get the tool. Any idea what i search for on ebay?
-
18mm swan neck spanner and 8mm allen bit iirc.
It can also be done with an allen key down the centre of a spark plug spanner

it may be 22 , i cant remember not done it in ages . someone will know the answer for sure (or pop a socket on it to check) but that style of spanner will do ya fine
-
Lol i got them both im sure they will both come in handy. Just hope they turn up by tuesday :D
-
Right for the record it was 21mm, and today is round 2! wish me luck guys :)
-
Good luck.
remember. if you cant get the strut out of the strut mount on one side (think drivers but cant remember) check the drive shaft. most people dont mention that you need to disconnect the drive shaft on one side as it catches on the sib frame. seems to only happen on some peoples golfs though :s
still easy enough. undo the bolt on the hub end. slip it out. Carry on as per before.
-
Another no go. Its bloody stupid its like the JOMs are not ment to go on.
We got my old strut out nice a smooth, infact i was thinking this is too easy.
Then trying to het the jom strut in, that was another story.... No matter what i tryed i could only get it in half way, it was like the strut was to thick to fit in the cup, so then i removed the JOM and tryed the old strut and it went straight in....
Long story short, got my hair off, and put my old on back in.
Gunna ether sell the joms or pay someone to "somehow" fit them haven't decided yet.
-
Oh and to top it off my abs light is now on.....
-
Try copper grease on the bottom of the struts. and put a jack under the strutmount/wishbone and jack it up pushing the trut into the mount.
abs light. proberbly knoked one of the wires off the break

Tired all that bud, even bolted the strut in place, and tired jacking the bottom into it, abs light turned off on the way hme

Did you try cleaning the slot that the strut into using a flapping wheel on a drill??
If its 100% clean slip it in jack the hub up and while there is pressure spilt the hub with a 1/4" wratchet and extension and maybe tap it a little and should go in.

nah brute force did it for me = knuckle rash lol
-
Didnt try that no, i dont understand why the standard shock goes in easy but aftermarket one wont?

probably over the years the original strut and never really moved so just fit together nicley where as your new strut isnt worn or whatever.
i feel the key to everything with cars is cleanliness!
weather it be strut, rear beam bushes, or just nuts and blots if its clean it will be easier!
-
New powdercoat will stop it going in

.....that's what I meant

JOM's are easy to fit mate lol I would say I would come and do em but I have no bloody time.
As everyone has said clean the hub and copper grease the strut and with abit of force it will go in.
I am off next Wednesday and can help you if that helps.
I found that once halfway in the lug on the back of the JOM strut needed assisting in as it didnt line up properly and stopped the strut from going all the way in.
When you trying next? My mate in Cardiff can/will fit them in his own unit if you wanted?
-
Dam wish I read this this before.... Anyway I have book it in to my local marcanic one of his staff members owns a Transporter with coil overs/ BBS RS and has alot of exp in fitting Coilovers etc, so there doing it for me next week for £100 all fitted and lowered to 40mm inc tracking.

Happy days

Yup  give yourself a couple of hours!
-
A little advise take your silicone TIP to a motor factor and buy GOOD new jubilee clips.
Remove the olf TIP beaware of the bolt through the standard tip on the turbo unit as people forget about this and wonder why it doesnt come off. Remove everything from the top then work to bottom of the TIP.
-airbox
-maf
-N75
-DV
-Hocky puck thingy
-bolt through the tip
Then from the top of the car push the new TIP onto the turbo it may help if you have someone under the car to assist it on the turbo and tighten a jubilee clip. The reverse the above. It took me about an hour and half the first time taken my time. Some are stubborn due to the one time only clips etc but you SHOULD be fine mate.
