When i bought my mk4 tdi yesterday.. it was struggling to start but would eventually start afew few seconds and drive perfectly..the guy told me it was the battery as its been parked for a while.. so then it stopped starting and had to be bump started.. so i spent 60 quid on a new battery.. all the lights work fine etc but the car still does not start unless bump started? it just makes 1 tick noise when i turn the key thats it..
could any1 help me or give me a clue to what it may be?

It's either an air freshner or the starter motor.

Nah, more likely to be a brake light bulb or the alternator I reckon.
-
my moneys on the rear seat belt buckle...........
maybe starter motor thou, check wiring and earth wiring ect..
-
errm sounds like the horn
-
It couldnt be the starter motor because you would be able to hear that? there is no noise.. just 1 quiet tick when i turn the key and then nothing.. mechanic reckons its the brake light bulb.. i mean alternator

...sounds like a golf to me :lipsrsealed:

100 quid and a new starter motor later... its working.. but then the oil pipe came off and back to the garage again, ive only had this car for 3 days and its spent its first three days in the garage.. im starting to regret buying a mk4, back to mk3 i tink..

these cars do need a certain amount of TLC

Dont worry buddy ive spent a total crap load only car in repairs and i only got her in april im close to 3k now and thats not including the price if the car. At this rate i would of replaced almost every aingle part on this car so im thinking ill have a new car soon :)
As for bits and bobs like this pal, its always a good idea to get 2nd hand parts like starter motors and fit them yourself im certain u could of done that yourself, for £20 scrap part, a nice cuppa and the misses rubbing your back telling you everything will be ok :)
One thing i would suggest is have tour car scanned on a vag but dot pay VW prices. Im sure if u ask someone they will scan your car for u, hell if u lived near me id do it for nowt just ne nice to help a fellow member as most have done for me plenty of times
Don't lose faith in your mk4, the day will come when u realise how good they are, i mean how convenient is the loop on the boot carpet that hooks on the parcel shelf? Total genius! :D
-
thats quite unlucky. ive put about 60k onto mine and probably spend £800 in fixing things. thats over 2 1/2 years. hope u get it all sorted, but as said once its done youll love it

That's why I say starter motor, becuase you can't hear it, only the solenoid click and the engine doesn't start as it's not turning over which is the job of the starter motor.
Your mechanic is no mechanic, the altenator is for charging the battery - you've already eliminated battery/enough starting charge.

If you look at the bottom of your Center unit, just above your sliding ashtray, you should ether see a pannel there that can be removed (Unless the previous owner lost it) then behind it will be a what looks like a Computer serail port that you can plug into a laptop (using a special cable) backed up with software (Vagcom) that is used to read the brain of the car (ECU) See below....
which tells vagcom if there is any problems stored in the cars memory and it will be in a form of a code, e.g 17705 which paired with this website....
Click me before I fall off a huge wall and hurt myself arrrrhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh (http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Category:Fault_Codes)
You can then Trail and error, by fixing this, and changing that to hopefully fix the problem and save you £££'s
Hope this helped :)

It doesn't have to be VAGCOM, that's going the expensive route when all you need to do is read the fault codes.

will have to try it.. but not any time soon because ive literally spent every last penny getting it onto road.. :undecided: :undecided:
