Ok so its new car time. want something fun and fast.
budget. i have 3k to spend on a car. but im young live with mam and dad ect. So dont have any outgoings so i think its the right time to get debted up to my eye balls rather than when im older have kids and a morgage.
Things ive been looking at
mk6 r
mk6gti
mk4 1.8t (would only want a low milage one though)
mk2 (would want to 1.8t it and insurance is rediculous)
Mx5
Audi tt
Old beemers.
so what suggestions you got
bearing in mind im 20 so cant afford to insure stuff too high group.
and i drive 50 miles per day to work so cant afford anything too thirsty (been looking into porche boxrs but the 3.2 letre engine would be a bit to thirsty)
-
If your doing that sort mileage try the GTD or a TDI but your budget is to low certainly for a mk6, Ive just purchased a Skoda Fabia and it drives lovely your 3k should get a decent one.
-
3k for mk6s
-
No i dont mind getting finance / loan on something like a mk6 cause the only real bills i have is phone bill. and rent i give mam and dad but if i got in trouble and for some reason couldnt afford to pay rent theyd just take it from me when i can afford.
So basically. my budget is 3k but happy to go higher for the right car.
and dont really fancy a ddiesel steve. never really like any ive drove.

BMW 123d m sport and a trip to see Doc!

3k for mk6s
Well a while ago you could get a MK5 for 5k, so maybe it's within reach now........
-
dont go getting yourself in hock over a car, its just not worth it, if i had my time again i would look towards owning property/land as thru that you can get what car you want

Oh I dunno, since owning property, I can only afford this bloody Mk4.

3k for mk6s
Not for a GTD Chuff or GTI show me where you can a get a Mk6 for 3k?
if your doing 50 miles a day or 2k a month your looking at £300 a month in petrol bills mortage money

Right then, lets look at this from a sensible viewpoint.
How much disposable income do you have each month? Although you say that your only outgoings are phone bill & rent you will be spending other money each month as well....nights out? cinema? clothes? petrol? insurance? road tax? mods?
What is your credit rating like? Do you really think you'll be approved for a £30k loan for a MK6 R? My guess is that if you only have a phone bill to your name you won't have built up a good enough rating yet.
More to the point can you really afford the monthy payments? Look at the bigger picture, think of a couple of years down the line...do you still want to be living at home then?
How much can you afford for insurance? I think that will probably rule out most of the options you have already suggested tbh.
Next is fuel, if a 3.2 Boxter is too thirsty then a 1.8t will also be too thirsty. Mine is circa 200bhp and returns almost identical consumption to my mates 3.2 TT, my long term average over the last 9000 miles is 30mpg:

My suggestion would be a MK4 PD130/PD150 and don't get yourself into debt, yes it's not the most exciting car in the world but with a couple of choice mods you'll have a decent amount of power/torque and you'll get 50mpg however you drive.
Have your mid-life crisis in 25 years when you can afford to

Right. disposable income varys. i got paid at midnight last night. when i got money out before going to the pub i had £900 odd left over from last month. i dont know how much now cause i feel like ive drank that 900 away :D
credit ratings fine. ive looked into it. had a credit cars for 2 years for uae in emergancys hen i wasnt earning as much so think thats bumped it up. had some bird from vw texting me about cars shes found matching the spec of a new car i was looking at i.e second hand mk6 gtis with 20k on the clock sort of thing. and shes said ide be able to finance.
no in a couple of years i dont want to be living at home. but lets face it. whem you buy a house you pretty much have to sell everything you own to get a deposit so ide probly be selling what ever car i have and driving a 1ltr saxo or something
and i was going by the mpg from autotrader or parkers which was saying 20mpg at a push.
You say do this when im 25. But thats going to be when im looking for a house/have kids/have more responsibilitys. so im thinking do it now when my only wory is can i afford to go out on the lash this weekend.

Single, live at home, likes beer. Needs good mpg. 3K to spend.
The answer is an MX5.

We have all thought about doing it mate...But in the long run, which is what counts, that wouldn't be a sensible move. Like getting a credit card when your 20 and thinking yay I'v got loads of money... :embarrassed:, and then having to worry about the credit card shuffle for the next 3 years!
The cost of living is ever increasing in more than one way, and wages/salaries aren't keeping up. Owning a car will not keep you pleased, hence I imagine, why we are all here talking about best mods and tricks!
I cannot afford a 1.8T with 300hp like some of the guys in that section...But I my best in keeping up in my DERV as I know I will probably never get a crazy fast car as I'll always have other things that I'll probably have to spend money on, like living!
Buy a fast diesel mate and as said, get 50mpg how ever you drive!

At the end of the day it's your decision, I would look at the bigger picture tbh. The amount of money that you will lose with the interest on the finance would go a fair way towards a house deposit.
I'm 25, I almost got a MK5 on finance before I got my MK4 last year and now I am so glad that I didn't. I bought a house in Sept and I know that I wouldn't have had the deposit/solicitors fees/money to spend on the house if I had been blowing £300 a month on finance.
Oh, and re-read what I said

Credit only becomes a problem when you can't afford the repayments, as others have said consider the longer term and think about cheaper fun cars....if you can save another couple of thousand which from what your saying should only take a few months there are loads of fun cars available
-
When I was 21 I ran a 2.3 turbo 240 GLT, was cheaper to insure than a Nova SR and more fun.
I suggest you look outside the norm for cheap fun, it amazing what you can find and run for cheaps.
With respect to stacking up debts while at home, I built a full studio on credit while living at the rents.
If I knew what I know now I would have pissed less away and bought a house during the early 90's recession.
When you have a Garage you can entertain cheap fun motoring a bit easier
