Title: Things to look out for?
Post by: Pez on 19 November 2012, 22:42
Hello just joined the forum, don't have my GTI yet but I soon will do! Just waiting for some funds to clear so I'm just wondering if there is anything i should look out for when i go to view some cars. I'm going to be getting a 1.8T, Thanks in advance. Pez

Something I would suggest is take a VAGCOM or laptop with VDS lite onit and scan the car b4 you buy it,, check for boost leaks, check rear asher jet works, check boot lock and all locks are not seezed, drive it check for knocking, ensure there is no banging due to worn bushes, Ensure your boost on the turbo kicks in around 2-3k.

ermmmmm thats all I can think f atm but there are loads more :)

check the person you buy it off, not saying they all are but young persons with a car like this would have had a few pedal crushing episodes. if they dont seem willing to part with the car then you know they would of looked after it as well. ask for service receipts and work history, owner history, any visual mods, what engine it is, timing belt, starter motor squeal, split breather hoses, carpets in all foot wells (check for water logging) front door nipples if sunroof is involved, give them a squeeze and see if water and gunk come out of them, clutch change (if it hasnt been done knock £400 from the price), check all windows if they are electric and listen out for clanking when they are wound down and up, tire tread with the winter on the way, if its AC then the last AC service...

cant really think of anything else apart from welcome and i hope you dont mind empty pockets   :lipsrsealed:

Thanks for the replies, you say i hope you don't mind empty pockets? Does this mean they're expensive to maintain  ?

this happened on my front passenger side, thought nothing of it and then one day the plastic sh!tty little clips snapped and the window fell into the door, decided to buy metal clips for all 4 doors and havent had any probs with it since, please bare in mind that this is what I did and may not happen to you!
