Hi,

Towards the front of my car (not far from the sump) there is a black round shape object that has rust and has rotted through, please see picture. Any help would be much appreciated.

Oh dear, don't sound good.  :grin:

It has a lot of rust which seems to have eaten away, I guess it needs replacing or?

What are the prices usually for a new starter motor?

got qouted £140 for a bosh and fitted, though £120 from any gen supplier and fit it yourself

Are you on Dubgeneration Chris? If not, they have a discount with Robinson VW in Norwich, Lowestoft and N. Walsham. I've been surprised by some of their prices!

I'm actually outside of Norwich, small village called Ludham not far from Potter Heigham/Stalham.

I usually take my Golf to Autotech near the new KFC drive thru.

does the starter motor work? if so dont change it for rust mate! just leave it or give it a quick sand down and spray if your really bothered

Hi buddy.

Yeah it seems to be working, I don't have any problems starting the car at all, I weren't sure if the rust was an issue though as there seems to be a slight hole in it caused by the rust eaten away. As you say I'll probably leave it till it doesn't work as money is an issue at the moment just wanted peoples thoughts on the matter.

That hole is meant to be there, it wont have rotted through as its thick metal.

id just leave it mate as said by gti_jamo they are thick so doubt it will rot all the way through just leave it save yourself some money mate!
