Title: Sunroof help
Post by: Danny171 on 18 November 2012, 11:57
Is the sunroof on a mk3 meant to open all the way?
I press one button and it raises at the rear, the middle button closes it, then the back button just drops it about 10mm, then nothing???? :cry:it's doing my head in

It should go back all the way.
My guess is that sliding rails are jammed up, more likely broken.

Does that mean the head lining needs to be removed??

Yep.... unfortunately lining needs to come off so you can access sunroof frame, rails are in there.
Personally would first check if you can crank it back (carefully!) with the crank (take off where interior light is). Don't crank when it's solid, you don't want to end up with it being stuck open (not in this country anyway).

Gutted, really didn't want to start messing with the roof lining.
When you say crank it open, do you mean with the Allen key that is supplied ?

allen key should be by the motor (just under that cover by the interior light)
if i was you i wouldnt bother as they get stuck & jam then you had it.

I replaced the sunroof on my Golf, and it's a surprisingly straightforward job (contrary to what the Haynes manual says), takes an hour or so but it's not difficult, just a lot of pieces of trim to remove.
