ok third thread of the last week :grin:
it is my understanding that now every car has to be insured if it is taxed.
my insurance on my current car doesent run out till the 23rd. hopefully going to be getting a new car this weekend that means that the car will be sat on my drive un insured for a week (will always have a car blocking it in the drive so cant be niked) what can i do, dont want to sorn a car for a week, and again dont want to swap cars over on my insurance and pay proberbly 100 quid for a weeks insurance. after ive swaped cars my current car will be getting sorned then sold.
would i be ok leaving my car uninsured at the top of the drive for a week?

It probably would not hurt just for one week however it has to be easier to declare it sorn online which takes minutes and then when you do insure the car the sorn notice will automatically get removed.

Tbh if its only going to be a week and definitely not going to move from the driveway id leave it but you are effectively breaking the law.

but when i sorn it wouldnt the tax be removed? then would have trouble taxing it cause i would have to wait for my insurance documents to come through? or am i getting the wrong idea of the whole sorn situation?

Just thought about it then. if i do leave my new car uninured for a week. then buy new insurance on new car when this years policy runs out. im then going to have my current car uninsured for how ever long it takes me to sell it which could.be god knows how long.
These new laws are sh!t. anything i can do bar declaring the one im going to sell sorn cause lets face it. having no tax is a massive put of.

If the current car isn't insured when you want to sell it, unless the test driver puts it on their policy (which their insurers probably wont allow for test drive purposes) they can't drive it...that'd put me off more than no tax...
If it's only a week or 2, can't you just get a new policy on the new car, let the old one run out and hope it sells in time? If it's a question of NCD Transfer, most insurers give you a couple of weeks to send it in, then send a letter reminding you to send it off anyway. Then the current car can be put on the new policy as a temp vehicle for a week or so (my insurers allowed 4 weeks maximum for my own second car for the purpose of keeping it on the road to sell) then people can test drive it on their insurance TP only.

The tax will still be valid when the sorn is removed so dont worry about that. As for selling the old one with no insurance simply state in the ad that no insurance on car so test drive only if insurance bought along. I certainly would not let this put me off buying a car.
I agree the new laws are crap but if it stops one tosser from driving with no insuranve it has to be worth it.

ah ok so you can sorn a car but keep the tax? i thought that when you sorn a car the tax was invalidated and you have to go to the post office/werever and give the disk back and get however much you are owed back.

I left mine on the road for 2 weeks uninsured.. guess what happend?!!! :shocked:

A week would be ok, until the end of the month, not legal, but documents take 3-4 days post at these times so cant always be done instantly.
However, what are you going to do at the end of the month, decalre it sorn anyhow or hope it sells?
Not many people will buy a car with no tax, tax and test adds hundreds onto a cars value...how are they going to test drive with no tax or insurance? Remmeber, YOU need insurance on the car for them to drive it 3rd party.
