Can't offer much in the way of advice concerning you problem, but just wanted to say I too have a 97 8V GTI and live in Bath, do you know of any local meets etc?

Your best going to a local motor factors for them. All you should need is your reg number and they will be able to identify what you need. One will be a large ribbed belt and the other will more than likely be a small 'v' shaped belt. There isn't that many variations to be honest.

If you have not got air con but power steering - then it's really simple as all 8V 1.8 and 2.0 engines on the mk3 have the same belts.....

Alternator belt is a 6PK894 (or 6PK895)
p/s belt is a v-belt 11.5mm x 685mm

Like I said, local motor factors are your best bet for these parts if your unsure what to get.

Yeah i did. They quoted me £87 for the parts and 90 is what the garage who were gonna fit them were quoting me so not worth my time. Also the motor factors didnt know if my car had a manual or sutomatic tensioner. Im going with my garage. They dont charge the earth n r good lads so next monday job done

Don't get a garage to do it, it's really bloody easy! A 1 spanner job in the Haynes manual lol

When I got my belts from motor factors it was like £20 for them both, the only question they asked was if it had air con which it didn't. The tensioner on your car will be a spring underneath the alternator so I assume it will be a manual tensioner.

I got no skills or tools. Theyre changing a full cam belt kit, power steering belt, alternator belt, oil change and oil filter. Ive changed the power steering belt on a honda once but i aint got tools or time anymore. Wish i did

Cool, u didn't say you were needing the cam belt done to. Thats a different job and parts altogether.

Yep cam belt is something I personally would leave to the pros. But the rest is seriously simple mate, kit yourself out with a Haynes manual and a basic set of tools and you'll save a shed load in labour charges.

That's a bloody good price if it includes a the cambelt and tensioner as well as the power steering and auxiliary belts supplied and fitted.

No the garage said £218 all in all parts fitted but the difference in the labour only charge to fit if i supplied was only £90 so im having them do it all now. Im also throwing in an oil change n oil filter too. All that work combined with the top up antifreeze pwersteering n brake fluid ive done should hopefully give me a few trouble free years of motoring. Just the rear pads to do myself in a week or two when i get the chance.

Dave what garage are you using? I need to change my water pump but haven't the time to do it myself.

Callum, changing water pump yourself is probably quicker than the drive to the garage....

By chance I got one for sale..... including thermostat, flanges, pulley... ready to go in as is.
PM me in case you need it - I really need to have clear out of all parts I have stocked for my mk3s over the years.

Lol I've got one already but thanks for the offer. Unfortunately I have nowhere lit to work on the car and with working 9-5, it's just easier to give it to a garage.

& getting bummed

the difference between the a/c & non a/c belts is that:
1. a/c belt it thinner & longer (alternator belt)
2. non a/c belt is thicker & shorter (alternator belt)
also i have changed mine with INA & DAYCO belts (pretty good)
the belts are easy if you got a few tools.

Yeah I go there usually for MOTs, literally 2 minutes from my house too.
