Title: Never ending speedo woes
Post by: Mitching on 13 November 2012, 21:24
After replacing my speedo and drive cog, I had an idea of the speeds I was doing.
That was handy.

A week or two later I noticed a puddle in the car, turned out to be gearbox oil dripping from the speedo cable behind the clocks.

Is it a faulty cable or is there something I missed or f**ked up when replacing the cable?
I took the old circlip off the old cable, put that on the new cable.
Got a new drive cog (orange) and fitted that.
Is there meant to be an o ring on the gearbox?

Cheers again GGTI!  :lipsrsealed:

Sounds like you haven't connected it to the back of the clocks correctly. Time to whip them back out and make sure you have as it will draw oil up as it rotates.

It's connected fine to the back of the clocks, I've double checked that and become a pro at getting the clocks out and in again I've done it that many times in the last month or so!

A quick google shows something about an O ring on the gear box and a  blocked breather for the gearbox which f**ks with pressure causing it to go through the cable, however I couldn't find anything relating to golfs so wasn't sure if that was the case!

Hi, I think the puddle is unlikely to be gearbox oil..........Its more likely to be hydraulic fluid from the brake master cylinder.

What makes you say that?
if it is gear oil the box breathe is blocked
How would I go about unblocking it?
Would oil in the cable mean it stops working and shows erratic speeds?

Well, now I see your pics, it can't be brake fluid!

I'm not aware of a beather on the mk2 box, it has plenty of space in there for expansion, you sure its not been overfilled?
