Ive never heard of that one before, didnt think it was possible to lock the ECU.

Pretty much all ECU's since I think EDC15 has been locked. It takes years to break down the protocols (or they are leaked when the new version is out)
Anything VAG from 2010 with a diesel (except the 1.6 TDI) will have EDC17 and will be LOCKED

My mates 2011 Leon fr had to have the ecu removed to map the car.

Yeeahh boooyyyyy!!

May be prudent to make it clear that the ECU on these needs to be removed and opened, making it very obvious that it's been tampered with which may go towards invalidating any power train warranty claim.

That's only if they bother physically looking at it. Plugging the car in will tell straight away anyway. And unless Carbon has somehow emulated the ECU manufacturing process, I doubt they would be able to reseal it it as well.

Don't doubt the guys are great at what they do - just saying if an ECU has to be cracked open, it will be easily identifiable. Again, though, if the car is plugged in and a full download is sent to Wolfsburg (which it will be if it's a major warranty issue) then a TD01 code will be flagged against the download and a warranty claim will be rejected.
