Any Ideas???
My 8v Golf has now done 185,000 miles it was brought up on quantum multigrade, for the last 10,000 miles ive been running it on quantum semi-synthetic, it now smokes in hot weather. I am told if i go back to multigrade it may calm the smoke.
is this true or advisable???
any ideas please

Don't see why it should make any difference. The only reason that I can see why it would make any difference is if they were different viscocities, which they aren't.
I think your change in oil is coincidental with something else. When does it smoke? First start up of the day? When you put your foot down? All the time?

Sounds like valve stem oil seals. Is it worse if its been ticking over for a while and you then boot it?
Rich is right, Oil type wouldnt make a difference. If it is your valve stem oil seals then its not the biggest of jobs, but still quite a major effort which involves removing and stripping the head to get at them, but this is quite a common problem on GTI's as they get older the rubber valve stem seals become hard and don't seal properly.
Worst case scenario is worn bottom end, but that gives you an excuse to bore it out ;)
