Title: wheel downsizing?
Post by: mkviken on 07 November 2012, 19:19
anyone gone from 18s to 17s?

im thinking about a set of OZ ultraleggera or something but in 17" in a quest for better performance and handling and to try and reduce road noise/vibration and reduce some rattles in the cabin.

has anyone went downsize or have experience with decent 17's (or even lightweight 18's if they improved things).

did they make much difference over the monza shadows and/or OEM bridgestones?

I'd say 19" with good tyres would be better than the awful 18" bridgestones

19s are too heavy

I fancy something a lot lighter. I reckon that would really improve the ride anyway

Snoopy do you want to lend me your 17s so I can see if its any different?

Yours rides better on the 18s with oem suspension than mine does. Mines a bit bouncy compared to what yours was.
Robbin (Redrobin went from 17s to 18 monza II then to 18" OZ iirc)

Went the other way from 17'' to 18'' on my first GTI.Can't say it made a huge differance & the 18'' look much better.Tyres make the differance to me,my ED30 is on Conti sport 3 now & there much better than the Vreds that were on the old ones.

+1. The 19"s I have with Pirelli Zero's are better than the Monza Shadows I had with Dunlops on my previous Mk6

Don't think I could put up with the worry of running 19s round here myself. The roads I drive daily look like a patchwork quilt you'd think vikers have been testing the tanks along them with metal tracks and testing the guns every so often too.
The 17 are bad enough, the rear often thunks over the tarmac patch ridges. 18s I could maybe deal with but 19s with so little tyre give or height would put the fear into me everytime it hit a pot hole. It's how I felt when running an ibiza with 195/45/16s. With 19s I would spend half my life at my mates garage with the car on the 2 poster spinning the wheels to make sure they were still round and not buckled on the inside.

Downsizing to reduce rattles probably won't work mine gets new rattles on what seems a daily basis this past fortnight I've been using it. It's got a perminate one at the rear passenger side. Both front doors. Rear passenger door alighnment so thuds, Behind the speedo, passenger side footwell dash area. Behind the radio, sunroof blind, centre concel were the two halfs meet on the drivers side and probably more. Mine would drive you mental mkviken compared to yours.
It's a joy to get back in the Leon on weekends with its only intermitent shelf rattle.

I'm going from 19" Talladega's at over 14kg a corner to 18" Team dynamics Pro Race 1.2's at 9kg a corner, whilst going from sh!temaxx's to Goodyear F1 Assym 2's.

Good move I think.

1kg off the rotating unsprung mass on the wheels equates to taking 4.2kg off the bodywork, so for me that means 20kg off the wheels is like 84kg out of the sprung bodyweight of the car for acceleration, which will definitely improve things.

I lost 0.16 on the 1/4 mile by having a passenger in. This would be similar.

im thinking about some OZ ultraleggera or suerturismo LM which will save between 4-5kg a corner or even less if i opt for 17's

also been pricing them up with goodyear assym 2 tyres as it happens.

about £1600 for 18's and £1300 for 17's with tyres

17's is a good call, but you have to be aware that you will limit your brake upgrade sizes by having them
